Over three days, seven officers gathered for an impactful Developing Financial Independence (DFI) workshop—an intentional journey focused on strengthening financial stewardship, personal empowerment, and sustainable ministry. The workshop provided a safe and engaging space for learning, reflection, and practical application.
Participants explored key themes such as:
- Understanding financial identity and habits
- Budgeting and cash flow management
- Building sustainable enterprises for long-term sustainability
- Creating income-generating initiatives within their Corps.
Beyond theory, the DFI workshop emphasized practical implementation. Each officer developed a personalized financial roadmap and budget aligned with their current reality and future goals. These roadmaps serve as living tools to guide better decision-making and foster long-term sustainability.

A key highlight of the workshop was the integration of faith and stewardship principles. During his welcome note, the Territorial Commander, Colonel Stephen Malins, encouraged the officers with the following Scriptures:
- 1 Timothy 5:8 – Be faithful.
- Luke 16:11 – Be trustworthy with the resources you are entrusted with.
- Proverbs 13:22 – Leave a legacy for coming generations; let there be something you will be remembered for building.
His words reinforced the belief that financial independence is not only for personal benefit but also strengthens the mission of the Church. Officers were encouraged to view financial and social enterprise literacy as a form of discipleship—one that enables them to lead by example within their communities.
The Secretary for Business Administration also reminded participants to be intentional about growth and careful not to sacrifice long-term opportunities for the sake of temporary comfort. The workshop sparked conversations around income-generating projects, equipping officers with ideas and frameworks to support both their corps and local communities in becoming more self-sustaining.
As the workshop concluded, the Chief Secretary, Lieut Colonel Themba Mahlobo, highlighted three key points: Stewardship, Responsibility, and Leadership. These, he emphasized, are essential for seizing opportunities to grow the financial stability of our Territory for generations to come.
There was a clear sense of transformation among participants, who expressed feeling more equipped, aware, and hopeful about their appointment’s financial journey. The commitment to ongoing accountability and implementation was evident, with a shared understanding that this is only the beginning.
The Developing Financial Independence programme continues to play a vital role in building financially resilient leaders—leaders who are not only spiritually grounded but also empowered to create lasting impact in their Corps, Centres, and Communities.
