God often calls people through the places that have shaped them for years. For Cadet Phumelele Mbokazi, that place was Nongoma Corps in the Northern KwaZulu Natal Division, where music, fellowship and worship helped nurture a growing faith and a deeper understanding of Christ’s purpose for her life. As she continues her training for officership, she reflects on the journey that led her to this calling and the lessons God has taught her along the way.
I grew up in a corps that has been my spiritual home for most of my life. I came to know God through the Corps ministry and through my love for music. Being part of the Singing Company, brass band and youth programmes gave me opportunities to experience God’s presence in a real way. I gave my life to God and began to understand that Christ not only saved me from sin but also had a purpose for my life.
My sense of calling to officership grew out of that same place. Serving in my Corps through music showed me how God uses ordinary people to draw others to himself. Over time, I began to feel that God was not only calling me to serve in my Corps and Division, but to give my whole life to Him in ministry. That calling was confirmed through prayer and through the peace I felt when I surrendered to His will.
Being at the College for Officer Training (CFOT) has stretched me beyond what I expected. Spiritually, I have learned to rely on God more deeply, especially when studies and assignments become demanding. Personally, God has been working on my character, teaching me humility and discipline. In ministry, I have grown in confidence in preaching, pastoral care, working in a team and leading others to Christ. Music is still part of who I am, but I have also learned that God wants all of me, not just my gift.
During my out training placement, I saw ministry in a different light. The biggest challenge for me was meeting new people. I am naturally reserved, and stepping out to introduce myself and build relationships felt uncomfortable at first. Through that experience, God taught me to depend on him for boldness and to see every person as someone He loves.
I learned that ministry begins with simple conversations and a willingness to listen and learn. I saw how people responded when both their physical and spiritual needs were met, and it deepened my desire to serve wherever God sends me. My out training placement confirmed that my calling is real and that God uses every part of our lives for His glory. The experience stretched me and helped me grow in compassion and confidence (Philippians 1:6; Ephesians 2:10).
I am deeply grateful for how God has led me to this point. I know that He is faithful in all circumstances, and I trust that He will continue to use my life and my gifts for His glory and for the salvation of others wherever He places me.
