United in Prayer. Standing in Faith. Believing for Peace.
Over the past few weeks, gang violence has become a frightening reality in our beloved community of Bonteheuwel. Gunshots have echoed through our streets, even directly outside our Early Childhood Development Centre while parents were collecting their children. Lives have been lost, families are grieving, and fear has gripped our community. These are no longer stories happening somewhere else. They are happening right on our doorstep.
As a Corps, an ECD Centre and a community, we cannot simply stand by while violence threatens the lives and futures of our children and families. Out of this desperation came a powerful call from both our Corps and community members to unite in prayer.
On Sunday, we embarked on 14 Days of Prayer, journeying through Psalm 91 and trusting in God’s protection, presence and faithfulness. Every evening, from 19h00 to 19h30, we gather on the pitch for open-air prayer, worship, Scripture and short devotions. We also prayerfully walk through the surrounding streets, lifting up the homes, families and children affected by violence. We are not confronting violence with violence, but fear with faith, hatred with love, and hopelessness with the hope we have in Jesus Christ.
Psalm 91:1 reminds us: “He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.”
As we pray, we are asking God to make our community a place where children can play without fear, parents can walk safely, families can sleep peacefully, and those caught up in gang violence can experience genuine transformation through the power of Christ.

Recently, I was challenged by a question that has remained with me: “If Bonteheuwel Corps were no longer here, would the community miss us?” My answer is a resounding yes. Not because of our building or our programmes, but because of the lives we touch, the children we nurture, the families we support and the hope we bring through Jesus Christ.
This question has reminded us of three important words: People. Mission. Legacy.
People are at the heart of our ministry. Our mission calls us beyond the walls of our Corps. Our legacy is measured by the difference we make in the lives of others. We are not simply a church situated in Bonteheuwel. We are called to be the Church for Bonteheuwel. Our prayer is that these 14 days will become far more than a prayer initiative. We pray that they will mark the beginning of renewed unity, healing, restoration and lasting peace across our community.
We refuse to allow violence to define the future of Bonteheuwel. Instead, we are taking a stand in prayer. We are standing together in faith. We are claiming Bonteheuwel for Jesus. May the streets that have echoed with gunshots once again echo with the laughter of children. May fear give way to hope, division to unity, and despair to the peace that is found in Christ alone.
