Most people are searching for peace. Some chase it through success. Others through relationships. Still others through substances, escape, or endless distractions. But if we’re honest, those forms of peace are temporary. The moment the storm rolls in – an illness, a job loss, a betrayal – our sense of calm is gone. So is there a kind of peace that holds steady no matter what life throws at us? Jesus says yes. In John 14:27, He offers a kind of peace that doesn’t come from the world. It’s deeper. It’s stronger. It’s enduring. It’s His peace and it’s available to you and me.
Jesus spoke these words just before His death: “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid.” Jesus knew what was coming. The betrayal. The cross. The scattering of His disciples. Yet, He speaks peace. That tells us something important: peace established in calm circumstances but rather its a heart that’s kept secure in Him regardless of circumstances.
The peace the world gives is situational and fragile. A holiday brings peace… until you get home. A relationship brings peace… until conflict arises. Money brings peace… until the economy shifts. Jesus says, “I do not give to you as the world gives.” The world’s peace depends on what’s happening around you. Christ’s peace depends on His presence and He is always near.
Let’s look at some Scriptures that show us the character of Christ’s peace. In Philippians 4:6–7 we read, “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation… present your requests to God. And the peace of God… will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” This is protective peace, a peace that guards. It’s not the removal of anxiety but the presence of something greater than fear.
Isaiah 26:3 says, “You will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are steadfast, because they trust in you.” God’s peace flows from trust, not control. When our minds are focused on Him, peace follows.
Colossians 3:15 tells us, “Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts…” The word “rule” here is like an umpire or referee. His peace can help discern what’s right, guide your decisions, and settle your spirit when life feels noisy.
Jesus’ peace is not a one-time download. It’s a gift we need to lean into daily, often moment-by-moment. Peace grows as we walk in trust, prayer, obedience, and connection with Him. Is there an area in your life where you’re lacking peace right now? What would it look like to invite Jesus into that space? How can you let His peace rule in your heart rather than fear or pressure?
Can I encourage you this week to take one step that helps you live into Jesus’ peace: schedule a time of solitude with God; fast from media or noise and create space for His voice; write down what’s making you anxious and surrender it in prayer; or memorize John 14:27 and speak it out loud when stress rises.
What the world gives will always come up short. But Jesus offers more – His peace that quietly rests within. What would it look like for you to rest in that peace today?
