John 15:11 – “These things I have spoken to you, that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be full.”

Have you ever wondered what it truly means to have joy? Not just the fleeting happiness of a good day, a favourite meal, or a fun moment, but a deep lasting joy that does not depend on circumstances? Jesus speaks directly to this in John 15:11.

In this part of His teaching, Jesus uses the picture of a vine and its branches. He tells His disciples that the secret to life, fruitfulness, and satisfaction is staying connected to Him. The branches can do nothing on their own; it is only in the life of the vine that they can bear fruit. And then Jesus makes a remarkable promise: the purpose of all He has shared is so that His joy may be in His followers and not just a little, but fully.

What does this mean for us today? First, it reminds us that joy is relational, not circumstantial. It is found in connection with Jesus, not in the passing things of life. We can face difficulties, challenges, and disappointments, yet still experience joy when our hearts are established in Him.

Second, joy is connected to obedience and love. Jesus does not promise joy in isolation from life with Him. Abiding in Him, keeping His words close to our hearts, and walking in love keeps us connected to Jesus and allows His joy to flow into our lives. Joy grows when we live in His presence and follow His ways.

And finally, Jesus speaks of fullness of joy. This is not a shallow or temporary feeling. Fullness of joy is complete, satisfying, and abundant. It is the kind of joy that strengthens us, sustains us, and gives us hope. It is a foretaste of the eternal joy we will experience in God’s presence forever.

So, how can we let this joy become real in our lives? We start by abiding in Christ every day, seeking Him in prayer, in Scripture, and in the everyday moments of life. We let Christ’s love direct our hearts and we obey not out of duty but out of relationship with Him. And we trust that even in trials, Jesus’ joy can fill us completely.

Today, let His words speak to your heart. His joy is available to you. Not borrowed. Not temporary. But full, deep, and lasting. Let yourself remain in Him, and experience the joy that only Jesus can give.

“Abide in Me, and let My joy fill you completely, not a borrowed happiness, not a momentary thrill, but the enduring, overflowing joy of the Son of God.”
