Life is full of decisions, some small and some that feel life changing. We all want to make the right choices, but wisdom does not always come naturally. The book of Proverbs reminds us that wisdom is not just knowledge or cleverness, it is knowing God and letting Him guide our hearts. Proverbs 1:7 says, “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.” Proverbs 9:10 repeats this truth, saying, “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.”

The writers of Proverbs want us to see something simple: wisdom starts with respect and trust in God. It begins when we pause, acknowledge God, and seek to honour Him in our choices.

Wisdom Begins with Reverence
The phrase “fear of the Lord” is not about being scared. It is awe, respect, and trust in God. It is a recognition that He is good, trustworthy, and worthy of our obedience. When we start with God, it changes how we see life. We stop relying only on our understanding or trying to control outcomes. We let God’s perspective shape our choices.

This reverence affects everyday life. It helps us pause before reacting in anger, pause before making decisions about money, relationships, or work, and pause before taking shortcuts that could hurt us or others. When our hearts start with God, even small daily choices honour Him.

Wisdom Guides Daily Decisions
Proverbs is practical. It gives guidance for relationships, work, money, speech, and character. When we honour God, our wisdom flows into these daily decisions.

For example, in conflict, wisdom helps us listen first, speak with care, and seek reconciliation instead of insisting on being right. In managing money, wisdom teaches generosity and careful planning. Even simple interactions, like how we treat someone at work or respond to a neighbour, become opportunities to show God’s wisdom when our hearts follow Him.

Knowledge of God Brings Understanding
Proverbs 1:7 and 9:10 both mention “knowledge of the Holy One.” Wisdom begins with reverence, but it deepens as we know God personally. This knowledge is relational, not just head knowledge. Reading the Bible, praying, and reflecting on God’s character help us see life through His eyes. The more we know Him, the easier it is to make wise choices.

The beauty of this kind of wisdom is that it guides us day by day. We notice opportunities, avoid unnecessary mistakes, and respond to challenges with clarity and calm. Decisions that once felt difficult start to feel manageable. Choices that seemed confusing are clarified when we look to God for guidance.

Walking in Confidence and Peace
When we involve God in every decision, we can walk with confidence. We do not have to rely only on our instincts or worry about making the wrong choice. Wisdom that comes from God protects our hearts, guides our paths, and brings peace even when life is uncertain.

As we honour God and grow in knowing Him, wisdom becomes part of how we live. Decisions that once caused stress become opportunities to rely on God. Choices that felt overwhelming can now be made with clarity. The life we build, one decision at a time, becomes a life that honours God and blesses others.

The Proverbs writers remind us that wisdom begins with God. It starts with reverence, grows as we know Him, and guides our everyday life. We can choose today to pause, acknowledge God, and invite Him into our decisions. When we do, we walk in clarity, peace, and joy.
