The Mid KwaZulu Natal Division have been on the ground providing support to families affected by a devastating fire that swept through the Jika Joe informal settlement. Residents awoke on Sunday morning to find that much of the settlement had been destroyed by fire. The blaze was the third to affect the community in the past two months and was the most severe yet.

Many families lost everything they owned and were unable to save personal possessions before the fire spread through the area. Important documents, including identity documents and children’s records, were among the items destroyed, creating further difficulties for families already facing hardship. The situation became even more challenging when strong winds and rain arrived the following day, leaving many people exposed to the elements with little protection.

Since the disaster occurred, Salvationists have worked alongside other humanitarian organisations to assist affected residents wherever possible. Reports indicated that approximately 440 shacks were destroyed, affecting more than 600 people, many of whom remain without permanent shelter.

From the beginning, The Salvation Army has provided spiritual support and encouragement to those affected while also responding to practical needs. Hygiene packs containing nappies, soap, petroleum jelly, sanitary products, wipes and instant porridge were distributed. Blankets were also provided to some elderly residents.

Particular attention was given to the needs of children. While many organisations focused on providing meals and blankets for adults, The Salvation Army sought to assist some of the youngest and most vulnerable members of the community.

As relief efforts continue, a number of challenges remain. Some residents have started rebuilding, but uncertainty surrounds the future of the settlement. Many people remain in the area because of its proximity to places of employment and the affordability of living there. Concerns also remain about children who are not attending school and families with babies who continue to face difficult living conditions. For many residents, the cycle of loss and rebuilding has become an ongoing reality, with the settlement having experienced three fires in less than two months.

Despite these challenges, the Mid KwaZulu Natal Division remains committed to standing alongside those affected, offering practical assistance, spiritual support and the assurance that they have not been forgotten.

The Salvation Army, an international movement and part of the universal Christian Church, seeks to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ and meet human needs in His name without discrimination. The response to the Jika Joe fire is one example of that mission being lived out in a community facing immense hardship.

“Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfil the law of Christ.” (Galatians 6:2)
