On Sunday, 23 August 2026, Salvationists gathered at Vosloorus Corps for a special celebration and praise meeting under the theme “Come to the Table of Celebration and Praise.” It was a day of thanksgiving, worship and gratitude to God as officers, local officers, soldiers and friends gathered to celebrate His faithfulness in the lives and ministry of Commissioners Garth and Patti Niemand.
Before the meeting began, the congregation was blessed by a musical prelude presented by the Central Divisional Band and Songsters. Their ministry prepared hearts for worship as leaders entered the hall and the atmosphere became one of joyful expectation.
The special guests for the day were Commissioner Garth Niemand, currently serving as International Secretary for Business Administration, and Commissioner Patti Niemand, currently serving as World Secretary for Spiritual Life Development at International Headquarters. As the Commissioners prepare to take up new appointments as Chief of the Staff and World Secretary for Women’s Ministries respectively from 1 October 2026, those present gave thanks to God for His leading in their lives and ministry. Their appointments are an important moment for the Southern Africa Territory and the Africa Zone as they become the first officers from the Territory and Zone to be appointed to these specific international leadership roles.
The meeting opened with words of welcome from Lieut Colonel Themba Mahlobo, who used Psalm 100:1 to 4 as a call to worship before leading the congregation in prayer. He warmly welcomed the gathered Salvationists and guests and reminded all present that they had come to celebrate God’s faithfulness.
Colonel Stephen Malins, Territorial Commander, acknowledged the special guests and said that they were gathered to celebrate and give thanks to God for all that He had done. Reflecting briefly on the officership journey of the Commissioners, he expressed gratitude for God’s leading throughout their years of ministry and declared, “We are proud to call you ours.” He further affirmed the Territory’s commitment to supporting them in prayer and referred to John 15:16 as a reminder that God had chosen and appointed them for this season of leadership.
A time of praise and worship followed, as the congregation lifted their voices in song and celebrated the faithfulness of God. The chorus Jehovah Is Your Name reminded all present that God remains the Mighty Warrior who is present in every stage of life’s journey.
Sharing words of greeting and encouragement, Commissioner Patti Niemand spoke warmly of being home in South Africa during their furlough. She reflected on God’s ability to work through ordinary people in ordinary places and encouraged Salvationists not to underestimate what He can do through lives surrendered to Him. “Jesus is building His Church,” she reminded the congregation. “Do not underestimate what God can do. Make yourself available to Him.”
The Central Divisional Band and Songsters continued to glorify God through their ministry. One of the band selections reflected the reassuring truth that“Still by His hand He leadeth me,” a testimony that echoed throughout the day. The Territorial Mission Team shared a dance item to the song I’ve Got a Reason to Praise. Through their presentation they expressed joyful praise to the Lord and encouraged the congregation to do the same.
The Scripture message was delivered by Commissioner Garth Niemand, who preached from Ephesians 6:10 – 18. His message centred on three important themes: People, Mission and Legacy. Speaking about people, he reminded the congregation that God’s Army functions best when it works together.“As God’s Army, we are on the winning side,” he said, encouraging Salvationists to support one another.
Turning to the theme of mission, Commissioner Niemand reminded Salvationists that they are engaged in spiritual warfare and must remain focused on the task God has given them. He challenged the congregation to take the gospel into places of darkness, to stand alongside the oppressed, and to reach a world that is dying without knowing Jesus. Referring to the armour of God, he reminded the congregation that believers are given armour because they are engaged in a spiritual battle. He described soldiers of The Salvation Army as“a fighting machine in the hands of God.”
One of the strongest challenges of the day came as he declared,“We are called to be out in the trenches standing on the promises of God, not sitting in the premises!” He warned that when believers take their eyes off Jesus and fail to recognise the schemes of the enemy, they can begin attacking one another rather than standing together.“Let it not be so with you,” he encouraged.
Addressing the theme of legacy, Commissioner Niemand referred to Isaiah 54:17 and reminded Salvationists that they have nothing to fear as they live courageously in God’s strength. He also challenged those present with the words,“Let the generations here today not be the ones to mess it up.” He continued by reminding the congregation that The Salvation Army was never intended to stand still:“We are a movement, not a monument. We don’t stand still. A mighty God machine, moving towards a God goal, with a God purpose, and God momentum and in a God direction.”
He further encouraged listeners by declaring,“We are only as strong as our obedience.” Drawing his message to its conclusion, he reminded Salvationists that holiness remains central to our identity and calling:“Holiness is our legacy. We need to live like Jesus. Jesus must be the centre.” The challenge was clear: the values, convictions and calling entrusted to one generation must be lived out and faithfully passed on to the next.
A time of appeal and prayer followed as many responded to the Spirit’s prompting. There was also a call to deeper service, including officership and envoyship, and once again people came forward in response. Following the presentation of gifts to the Commissioners, the meeting concluded in prayer.
As Salvationists left Vosloorus Corps, they did so encouraged by the reminders shared throughout the day. God continues to raise leaders for His purposes, His Church continues to advance, and every Salvationist has a part to play in His mission. The challenge to stand together, remain faithful to the mission, pursue holiness and keep Jesus at the centre will no doubt continue to inspire those who were present. The message on people, mission and legacy was a timely reminder that the values, convictions and calling entrusted to us today must be faithfully lived out and passed on to future generations. In giving thanks for the ministry of Commissioners Garth and Patti Niemand, the Territory also gave thanks to God, whose hand has guided their journey and whose purposes continue to unfold through His people around the Territory and around the world.
