On Friday, 17 October, Senior Captain Nelly Phakathi (R) celebrated an extraordinary milestone — her 104th birthday. Her life is a beautiful example of enduring faith and God’s sustaining grace.
To mark this special occasion, I had the joy of visiting Senior Captain Phakathi, joined by our Divisional Commander, Captain P. Ndlovu, DYO, and Lieutenant N. Mhlongo, DCMO. We brought a small gift bag, a birthday cake, and a framed message from the Territorial Secretary for Retired Officers, Lieutenant Colonel Doris Dlamini.

Senior Captain Phakathi welcomed us with so much joy and held the framed message close, clearly treasuring it. Together, we sang one of her favourite songs, number 7 from the Zulu Songbook, filling the room with music, laughter, and celebration. Her family shared in the joy, and the visit reminded us of the wisdom, warmth, and faith that shine from a life devoted to Christ.
Moments like these fill us with gratitude and encouragement. Senior Captain Phakathi’s life inspires us to keep following God with joy and commitment. We also take this opportunity to honour all retired officers whose dedication and faith continue to shape The Salvation Army today. Their example inspires every generation of officers, soldiers and junior soldiers – we are so grateful for each one.
