Major Carin Holmes, the Divisional Commander of the Western Cape Division, shared the highlights of the retirement service for Major Patricia Balfour, which took place this past weekend. The service marked the culmination of 30 years of ministry as a Salvation Army Officer, during which Major Balfour served with love and compassion.

During the service, words of appreciation were shared with Major Balfour: “Rest well, Major Balfour. Thank you for serving the Masiphumelele community with love, passion, and empathy. You prayed for us, listened to us, cried with us, and laughed with us — we will miss you dearly.” Reverend Woko, representing the Masiphumelele Ministers Fraternal, described Major Balfour as a living testimony of God’s grace in the community. “The Fraternal will surely miss this woman of God,” he added.

Lieut. M. Dathini also shared humorous moments experienced with Major Balfour across the Division, adding to the warmth and joy of the occasion. Soldiers, Pastors, Women’s Ministry members, community leaders, and friends expressed their appreciation and admiration, reflecting the wide impact of her ministry.

The afternoon was filled with laughter, tears, reflection, worship, prayer, and thanksgiving. Major C. Holmes reminded Major Balfour of her covenant with God – a God who has not changed, who loves her, saved her, sanctifies her, and keeps her. Major Balfour leaves a legacy of service, compassion, and devotion to God and community. In the words of the Divisional Commander: We salute you, Major. Enjoy your retirement. Salani kakuhle, iNkosi inisikelele! (Stay well, God be with you!)
