Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship. Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will. Romans 12:1-2

It is possible to believe the gospel and still think like the world. Paul challenges the Church to allow salvation to rewire the mind so that faith becomes visible in everyday living. Paul’s letter to the Romans moves from belief to behaviour. After eleven chapters explaining God’s saving work through Jesus Christ, Paul turns to how believers are to live in response. Renewal of the mind is not presented as an optional spiritual practice but as the normal outcome of salvation.

Paul urges believers to offer themselves as living sacrifices. This language would have been striking. Sacrifices were usually dead. Here the sacrifice is alive, active, and ongoing. This offering involves the whole person, including the mind. Salvation Army doctrine affirms that salvation leads to a changed life marked by holiness and obedience. Renewal of the mind is part of this continuing work of grace in the believer .

Do not be conformed to this world

Paul warns against being shaped by the patterns of the world. Conformity happens quietly and often without intention. Cultural values, media, habits, and unexamined assumptions all press in on the believer.

Scripture consistently teaches that the world’s thinking is opposed to God’s truth. Proverbs 23 v 7 reminds us that as a person thinks, so they are. Without renewal, the mind naturally follows patterns that lead away from God. For Salvationists, this speaks directly to our call to live differently. The Soldier’s Covenant commits us to a lifestyle shaped by Christ rather than society .

Be transformed by the renewing of your mind

Transformation is God’s work, but it involves our willing participation. The word Paul uses implies an inward change that produces outward fruit. Renewal is not behaviour modification alone. It is a change in how we think, interpret, choose, and respond.

Renewal happens as the Holy Spirit reshapes our thinking through Scripture, prayer, worship, and obedience. Jesus prayed that His followers would be sanctified by truth. God’s Word renews the mind by correcting false beliefs and forming Christ centred values.

Discerning the will of God

Renewal of the mind enables discernment. Paul links renewed thinking with the ability to test and approve God’s will. This includes moral decisions, relationships, service, and calling. This is especially important for leaders and soldiers. Discernment is not instinct alone. It flows from a mind shaped by Scripture and prayer. When the mind is renewed, God’s will becomes clearer, not necessarily easier, but recognisable.

Application and reflection

  • What patterns of thinking have shaped me more than Scripture?
  • How regularly do I allow God’s Word to challenge my assumptions?
  • In what areas do I need my thinking to change so that my living can change?

Renewal of the mind is a daily surrender. As we offer ourselves to God, He continues His transforming work. As day by day we place our thoughts, desires, and decisions in God’s hands, He gently shapes us into people whose lives increasingly reflect Christ and serve His purposes in the world
