The 10th and 15th Officers’ Reviews, held under the theme Leading with Vision, Serving with Excellence, provided a significant opportunity for reflection, renewal and reassessment of officers’ ministry journeys. Eleven officers from various appointments across the Territory participated in the review process, which focused on rekindling God’s call, fostering spiritual renewal and reaffirming commitment to faithful officership. The reviews aimed to strengthen officers as they lead with vision and serve with excellence.
Upon arrival, delegates were welcomed by the Secretary for Personnel, Lieutenant Colonel Thomas Dlamini, who outlined the four day review programme. The Territorial Commander and Territorial President of Women’s Ministries, Colonels Stephen and Theresa Malins, delivered the keynote address, inviting officers to “come to the table” of vision and alignment, service and accountability.
In their opening remarks, the Territorial Leaders emphasised that visionary leadership requires excellence, alignment, service and accountability. They highlighted the importance of deepening relationships, maintaining alignment with God’s mission and remaining focused on the Territory’s vision and purpose. The Territorial Commander stressed that alignment increases the impact of ministry when it is reflected across every area of service. The leaders reminded delegates that effective leadership requires trust in God, alignment with the Territory’s vision and personal accountability in advancing the mission. Officers were encouraged to leave the reviews with renewed courage, healing, purpose and a fresh commitment to excellence in service.
The second day consisted of individual review sessions for each officer. These reviews focused on several key areas, including personal health and wellbeing, personal development, shared evaluations and assessments, and growth throughout the officership journey.
On the third day, the Chief Secretary, Lieutenant Colonel Themba Mahlobo, addressed delegates on the theme Leading with Personal Vision. He emphasised the importance of intentional personal growth, self leadership and spiritual maturity. Officers were challenged to develop a clear sense of purpose, take ownership of their personal development and lead through godly character and example. He also encouraged them to move beyond negativity and direct their energy towards Kingdom impact.
Following the Chief Secretary’s session, the Leader Development Secretary and Training Principal, Captain Owen Mutize, challenged officers to cultivate a continual desire for personal growth and development that would enhance their effectiveness and competence in ministry. Speaking on the theme Developing Excellence in Leadership, he drew attention to the example of Jesus Christ, who “grew in wisdom and stature, and in favour with God and man” (Luke 2:52). Officers were encouraged to follow Christ’s example throughout their officership journey.
On the final day of the review process, the Territorial Secretary for Women’s Ministries, Lieutenant Colonel Nokuthula Mahlobo, highlighted the importance of excellent leadership through shared ministry. Emphasising collaboration, delegation and mutual support within the Body of Christ, she drew from the example of Moses and Jethro to encourage officers to embrace shared ministry and empower others. She reminded delegates that sustainable leadership depends on healthy relationships and personal wellbeing. She also challenged officers to let go of negativity that could distract them from effective ministry and encouraged them to remain grounded in their identity as servants of God.
The closing session, led by the Territorial Leadership Team, reaffirmed God’s faithfulness and challenged officers to recommit themselves to their calling. Drawing from John 21:15 to 17, the Territorial Commander emphasised the themes of restoration, recommissioning and shepherding God’s people. Officers were reminded to remain faithful to their covenant and mission as Salvation Army officers.
The Reviews concluded with gratitude for God’s sustaining grace and a renewed commitment to lead with vision, serve with excellence, collaborate effectively in ministry and faithfully advance the mission of The Salvation Army. Officers departed encouraged, challenged and more closely aligned with the Territory’s strategic direction and God’s purpose for their lives and ministries.
