On February 23, 2024, the Bonteheuwel Corps launched the Junior Miss Programme, driven by a vision to engage and empower young girls in the community. While a member of the Corps organized mini soccer games for boys, Captain Heather Rossouw recognized an opportunity to engage the girls separately.
Initially, only two girls attended the first Junior Miss gathering. However, as word spread, the numbers quickly grew. What started with two girls grew to six girls at the following meeting and then blossomed into a gathering of twenty-one by the third week! Bonteheuwel Corps aims to provide a nurturing environment where girls can explore various activities such as crafting, culinary pursuits, and, most importantly, deepen their understanding of God’s love and teachings. The impact of the Junior Miss ministry on these young lives is significant. Captain Heather and her team are filled with joy in knowing that the Corps serves as a sanctuary—a safe haven where the girls feel welcomed and cherished.

Zoë van Leeve has been an invaluable asset to this ministry, serving as a radiant role model for the girls. During the most recent meeting, Zoë captivated the girls with the story of Jesus’ resurrection, using a creative and interactive approach. Using puff pastry and marshmallows, she illustrated the profound message of Easter. As the marshmallows were enveloped in the pastry, it symbolized Jesus in the tomb. Yet, upon baking, the marshmallows melted, leaving the pastry sweet but hollow—a powerful metaphor for Christ’s resurrection and the empty tomb.

Captain Heather says that in moments like these, the significance and value of their work become abundantly clear. They are not merely organizing activities; they are sowing seeds of faith, hope and love in the hearts of these young girls. Through their combined and continuous efforts, they are shaping future generations and fostering a community rooted in God’s love and built on His Word.
