The Salvation Army and the University of the Witwatersrand came together on September 28, 2024, to honour Professor Mzilikazi Khumalo’s life and contributions. The event, held at the University’s Great Hall, drew over 500 attendees, including Salvation Army officers, cadets, soldiers, musicians, former colleagues, family members, and friends.

Major Timothy Mabaso led the celebration, setting a reflective tone with his opening remarks. Professor Mhlambi was among the keynote speakers, delivering a tribute that highlighted Professor Khumalo’s significant contributions. Dr. Peter Qwabe, a retired Divisional Songster Leader from Mpumalanga and eSwatini, shared insights into Professor Khumalo’s musical journey.

The day featured various musical performances from Salvation Army Divisional, Sectional and Corps music sections, showcasing a mix of traditional and modern compositions. Participants included the Northern KwaZulu-Natal Divisional Band, Mpumalanga/eSwatini Songsters, Peart Memorial Band and Songsters, Far South Band, and the Central Divisional Youth Band. The programme included notable pieces arranged by Professor Khumalo, such as “Kwadeda Ngendlale” and “Zidalwa ZikaJehova,” along with other spiritually uplifting songs like “Ungangedluli Msindisi” and “Jesu Ingwe Emabalabala.”

A significant highlight was the presentation of the book “The Music of Mzilikazi Khumalo: Language, Culture, and Song in South Africa” by Professors Pooley and Mhlambi. This publication further solidifies Professor Khumalo’s impact on South African music and culture. In addition, awards and medals were presented to participating brigades, recognizing their commitment and contributions to music ministries. This ceremony highlighted the powerful connection between music, faith, and service.

The day was a meaningful tribute, filled with song, Scripture, and speeches, celebrating a deeply respected and dearly loved man whose music continues to leave a lasting mark on the nation.
