Life can change in an instant. For Wonga Mgudlwa, a 51-year-old gentleman, that moment came just before Christmas in 2024 when he suffered a sudden and unexpected stroke due to uncontrolled high blood pressure. What should have been a season of celebration turned into a time of uncertainty and despair. On 27 December, Wonga was transferred to Booth Memorial Hospital for rehabilitation, arriving in a state of complete dependence and deep discouragement. Overwhelmed by his condition, he confided that he had lost all hope and no longer wished to live. But God had other plans for Wonga.

Physiotherapist Jamie Nomdo and a dedicated team of therapists worked tirelessly with Wonga, guiding him through the slow and challenging process of recovery. With determination, Wonga committed to his exercises, and little by little, his strength began to return. It was not an easy journey—there were moments of discouragement—but through attending chapel services, he found renewed faith in God. In one of the weekly worship services, Wonga testified that he had come to see his recovery as a second chance from God. He recommitted his life to Christ, trusting in Jesus for both physical and spiritual healing. Week by week, those around him witnessed his growth in faith and resilience.

On 20 February, Wonga experienced a moment of triumph as he walked out of Booth Memorial Hospital, having completed his in-patient therapy programme. His family rejoiced, amazed at the progress he had made, as they had feared he would never walk again. Using a quadropod walking stick for support, Wonga took those steps with newfound independence and hope. As his healing journey continues, we trust that he will soon walk unaided.

Wonga’s final words as he left the hospital were filled with gratitude—praise to God and appreciation for the dedicated staff of Booth Memorial Hospital. Looking ahead, he plans to join a church in his community to continue growing in his walk with the Lord.

The photo captures a beautiful moment: Wonga Mgudlwa and his physiotherapist, Jamie Nomdo, celebrating the victory of him being able to walk out of the hospital. To God be the glory!
