Practical Religion is a pocket-sized book with an invaluable teaching series written by Catherine Booth, ‘The Mother of the Army.’ These were public addresses that the author wrote and delivered to audiences. These addresses were later compiled into a book.

These timeless presentations address issues faced by parents and children, which keeps them relevant for everyone. The main focus is on living out one’s faith. It discusses daily life and the journey to becoming a professing Christian, emphasizing the importance of a life that truly reflects one’s beliefs.

The author begins with an address to parents and children, pointing out that teaching without modeling one’s own words is fruitless. Some parents complain about their children growing wild between the ages of 12 and 17, and she argues that such parents affirm a Christianity that does not come from the heart.

Anyone who picks up this small book to read will be amazed at how different addresses converge on a single theme: the heart. She also addresses the topic of worldly amusement and Christianity, exploring how far Christians can engage in worldly amusements without compromising their faith. The Ephesian congregation, as described in Revelation 2:1-5, had faithfully served the Lord but had left their first love. Love comes from the heart, not just from deeds and words, making the heart central to true faith. The author highlights this truth.

Some topics featured in this book include: Dealing with Anxious Souls—An Address to Christian Workers, Compel Them to Come In, Hot Saints, Conscience, Aggression, The Uses of Trial, and Prevailing Prayer.

This book has challenged me as a Salvationist to understand that Christianity is not just theology; I must practice what I preach. I cannot worship God while engaging in worldly amusements. I cannot allow my children to assist relatives and neighbours in ways that compromise our faith under the guise of having fun. Faith is practical. I am convinced of my calling as a follower of Jesus in The Salvation Army. The teachings are straightforward, biblically grounded, and help readers live with purpose, aware that God is reflected in their daily lives.

I encourage all Salvationists to read Practical Religion by Catherine Booth. Many of the questions we have about life will find their answers in its pages.
