Sometimes, life takes us through seasons of deep pain—moments where we feel unseen, unheard, and unsure of how to move forward. But even in the hardest places, God is at work, gently leading us toward healing and restoration. In this powerful testimony, Malehlohonolo Betty Seake shares her journey from brokenness to redemption, revealing how God used The Salvation Army to bring hope, healing, and a renewed sense of purpose. Her story is an important reminder of God’s faithfulness and the hope found in Him, no matter how difficult the journey.

I am Malehlohonolo Betty Seake. I work at The Salvation Army Mountain Lodge Psychiatric Centre as a cleaner. I live in Magaliesburg and have done so for the past nine years. Unfortunately, I stayed in a relationship that blinded me to my value for a long time. It became so toxic in my life that I had nowhere to run. I informed my then-employers, Majors Michael and Amenda Doubell, about my situation at home.

I was hiding my pain of abuse by always smiling and laughing around the workplace. I thought that by pretending, it would take away all my pain. Major Amenda suggested that I go to a place called The Salvation Army Beth Shan in Pretoria, a Centre for Abused Women.

I had to leave work at Mountain Lodge for some time to attend the programme, but kind arrangements were made so that I did not lose my job. When I arrived at the Centre, it was a bit strange for me. I felt so lonely, even though the ladies there were friendly towards me. But I soon came to realize that I was in the right place—a place of peace.

I was introduced to Bible study by Major Maggie Mugama, who was the Administrator there at the end of last year. I gradually recovered emotionally, regained my strength, and reclaimed my worth. I learned how to love and appreciate myself again. At the Centre, I also learned many skills like baking, handcraft, sewing beads onto takkies, and how to conduct myself as a woman. I don’t consume alcohol anymore.

Most importantly, at Beth Shan, I found Jesus. I am still a baby in Christ, and I need more guidance and nurturing so that I can continue to grow spiritually. At the moment, I attend a local Christian church in Magaliesburg, but the daily morning devotions at Mountain Lodge help me a lot to connect with God. I am also doing my Bible study at home, which is helping me grow more in my spiritual journey.

I am still trying to get there, but God really helped me through. I am stronger in my faith and able to stand up for myself now. I am a more responsible mother of two, and I can look after my children. My past relationship was very bad, but since my rehabilitation, I am a better mother and can communicate well with my children.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank The Salvation Army. I am grateful to them for helping me. I was given a job, and they made sure they supported me all the way when I needed help. I continue to be supported by the new Administrators, Majors Thomas and Domenica Sesedi, who arrived at Mountain Lodge this year.

THIS IS MY STORY. GLORY TO GOD, I AM REDEEMED!
