Scripture: Genesis 28:10–22

Jacob was on the run. He had left home, carrying the weight of mistakes that had hurt his brother and unsettled his family. The road stretched ahead, long and uncertain. Alone, he stopped for the night and used a stone as a pillow. There was nothing remarkable about that spot, nothing to suggest God would appear there.

And yet, God did. In his sleep, Jacob had a dream. He saw a ladder reaching from earth to heaven, with angels moving up and down on it. God’s presence was revealed in a moment Jacob could never have anticipated. God spoke, promising him the land beneath his feet, descendants beyond counting, and His presence accompanying him wherever he went. Jacob’s encounter reminds us that God meets us in ordinary circumstances. Even when life feels uncertain, even when we are afraid, God is at work in ways we might not notice.

Awe led to action.

When Jacob woke, he was struck by what had happened. “Surely the LORD is in this place, and I did not know it,” he said. The stone, the quiet of the night, the ordinary setting … all of it became a reminder of God’s presence. Jacob responded by setting up the stone as a marker, pouring oil on it, and naming the place Bethel, House of God. He made a vow, committing himself to the God who had appeared in that moment. Awe led to action. Recognition of God’s presence changed how he lived.

This story invites us to consider our own lives. What would your Bethels be? Where has God revealed Himself in moments you might have overlooked? It could be a quiet morning of prayer, a conversation that brought clarity, a moment of unexpected peace in a difficult day, or a challenge that turned into a lesson of His care. These are ordinary moments that become meaningful because God was there.

Jacob marked the place so he would remember. And we can do the same. Taking note of where God meets us, reflecting on His presence, and recalling His faithfulness helps us see Him at work even in ordinary, everyday moments.

Reflection Questions:

  • Can you recall a time when God’s presence became clear only in hindsight?
  • How do you notice God in ordinary or unexpected moments?
  • What practical steps can you take to remember and reflect on the ways God has worked in your life?

Jacob’s encounter at Bethel reminds us that awe begins with noticing. It grows when we pause, reflect, and respond. God does not only appear in dramatic events. Sometimes He waits in ordinary places, inviting us to open our eyes, look around, and see. When we open our eyes and hearts to notice Him, even ordinary moments can become opportunities to encounter His presence.
