Humility is not often celebrated in the world around us. In fact, in many ways, society promotes self-exaltation and personal achievement. But as followers of Jesus, we are called to a different standard. In the Kingdom of God, greatness is found not in rising above others, but in humbling ourselves for the sake of others. Humility is foundational to a Christ-centered life.

Scripture Focus:

  • Matthew 23:11-12 – “The greatest among you will be your servant. For those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.”
  • Philippians 2:3-5 – “Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others. In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus.

The Call to Humility in the Kingdom of God (Matthew 23:11-12)
Jesus flips our understanding of greatness upside down. The world tells us that success, power, and prominence are what matter, but in God’s economy, true greatness is found in humble service. In Matthew 23, Jesus challenges His disciples to lead with humility, not with pride. This call to humility is especially important in the context of The Salvation Army’s mission, where we are called to serve the marginalized and downtrodden. Jesus’ example of humility should be the model for our lives and ministry.

Reflection Question:
How does the world’s view of greatness differ from Jesus’ teaching in Matthew 23? How can we, as Salvationists, reflect Christ’s humility in our work and service?

Humility in Action: Valuing Others Above Ourselves (Philippians 2:3-5)
Paul’s letter to the Philippians speaks directly to the way we are to interact with others in the body of Christ. Humility is not just an internal attitude; it must be expressed in how we relate to others. We are to “value others above ourselves,” putting their needs and well-being before our own. In a context like South Africa, where division, injustice, and inequality are real struggles, embracing humility and selflessness can be a powerful testimony to the power of the Gospel.

Reflection Question:
What are some practical ways we can put the interests of others before our own, especially in our relationships and in our ministry to our communities?

Application:

  • Serve with Humility: Identify one person or group in your community who needs your help, and find a way to serve them without seeking recognition.
  • Examine Your Heart: Take time this week to reflect on your own motivations. Are you seeking personal gain, or are you focused on valuing others above yourself?

Closing Prayer:
Father, we thank You for the example of humility that Jesus set for us. Help us to live in a way that honours You, placing others’ needs above our own. May we be a people who reflect Your love and grace, not through self-exaltation, but through humble service. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
