In the earlier Bible study, we laid the foundation of humility, learning that it’s the key to true greatness in God’s Kingdom. But what does humility look like in action? What does it mean to truly serve others in humility? In this study, we will explore how humility leads us to adopt the heart of a servant—following Jesus’ example and living out His mission in our communities.

Scripture Focus:

  • Luke 22:27 – “But I am among you as one who serves.”
  • Matthew 20:26-28 – “Whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first must be your slave—just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”

Jesus – The Ultimate Servant Leader (Luke 22:27)
In Luke 22, Jesus models what it means to lead through service. At the Last Supper, when His disciples were arguing about who would be the greatest, Jesus did not rebuke them harshly. Instead, He demonstrated His leadership by serving them. Jesus’ leadership was not about power or prestige; it was about humbling Himself and meeting the needs of others. For us as Salvationists, this should shape the way we lead in the church, in our communities, and in our families.

Reflection Question:
What does it mean for you to be a “servant leader”? How can you embody Jesus’ example of leadership in your role within the Salvation Army?

The Power of Serving Others (Matthew 20:26-28)
In Matthew 20, Jesus teaches His disciples about the radical nature of true greatness. He tells them that the path to greatness is not about striving for authority but about serving others. This is the heart of the Salvation Army’s mission: to serve the poor, the broken, and the lost. Serving others doesn’t always bring recognition or reward, but it always reflects the heart of Jesus. As believers, we understand that this kind of service is not just a nice thing to do, but an important part of our spiritual growth—becoming more like Christ.

Reflection Question:
In what areas of your life do you find it hardest to serve others? How can you overcome those challenges to reflect the heart of Jesus more fully?

Application:

  • Serve Quietly: This week, look for an opportunity to serve someone in a way that goes unnoticed. Do it with the pure intention of serving Christ.
  • Examine Your Motivations: When you serve, check your heart. Are you seeking personal gain, or are you genuinely serving out of love for others and for Christ?

Closing Prayer:
Lord, we thank You for the example of humble service that Jesus has set before us. Help us to follow in His footsteps, serving others with a pure heart. Teach us to lead by serving and to love others as You have loved us. May our lives reflect Your heart for the lost and the broken. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
