Today, The Salvation Army’s Territorial Headquarters (THQ) bid farewell to three valued members of our family as they embark on a well-earned retirement. Mrs. Helen Tuck, Mr. Elliott Mthimunye, and Mrs. Desre Murray collectively brought an incredible 81 years of dedicated service to the mission of The Salvation Army.
These individuals have served across a variety of departments over the years, including Central Services, the College for Officer Training, Property, Public Relations & Communications, and various offices within the Programme Department. Each of them has contributed significantly to mission, working with diligence, faithfulness, and a heart for God’s work.
During the farewell gathering, Mr. Leon Schmal spoke on behalf of THQ employees, highlighting the character and commitment of each retiree. Major Thataetsile Semeno, speaking on behalf of Officers, reflected on how their service had blessed the lives of Officers and supported the broader mission of The Salvation Army.

To honour their service, each retiree was presented with a certificate of appreciation and a gift. In turn, they shared heartfelt reflections:
- Mrs. Helen Tuck, retiring after 38 years of service, expressed deep gratitude for her team and shared how God’s faithfulness had sustained her throughout her journey. Quoting 1 Corinthians 10:13, she reminded everyone, “No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it.”
- Mr. Elliott Mthimunye, who served for 38 years, recounted highlights of his journey at THQ, with the support of his family present at the event.
- Mrs. Desre Murray, who served for 5 years, reflected on how much she enjoyed working for The Salvation Army and how she had used her role to educate the public about the organization’s mission and values.
Lieut-Colonel Themba Mahlobo, Chief Secretary, presented the certificates and tokens of appreciation. Speaking from the heart, he expressed sincere gratitude for their unique contributions. The occasion concluded with a prayer for God’s continued blessing, peace, provision, and joy as they enter this new chapter of their lives.
As The Salvation Army, we are deeply grateful for employees who serve with hearts devoted to God’s work and who make a meaningful impact in mission across the Territory. May God continue to bless and guide Mrs. Tuck, Mr. Mthimunye, and Mrs. Murray as they move into this next season of life, trusting Him to lead the way forward.
