There are things a person can live without, and there are things a person cannot live without. As Christians, we cannot live without the presence of God. Without His presence in our lives, we are vulnerable and unable to do what He has called us to do. Jesus reminds us in John 15:5:“Apart from me you can do nothing.”
God’s presence goes beyond simply knowing about Him. It is about enjoying an intimate relationship with Him. The psalmist declared,“I will fear no evil, for you are with me” (Psalm 23:4b). Knowing that God is with us brings peace, confidence and courage, regardless of our circumstances.
God’s Presence in the Old Testament
Throughout the Old Testament, God’s presence was visible and tangible among His people. He revealed Himself through symbols that assured Israel of His guidance and care. His people were reminded that they could trust Him and remain still, even when facing difficult situations.
God’s presence was seen:
- In the pillar of cloud by day and the pillar of fire by night that guided the Israelites.
- In the Tabernacle, which represented God’s dwelling place among His people.
- In the Ark of the Covenant, which symbolised His presence and covenant relationship with Israel.
These visible signs reassured God’s people that He was with them and leading them.
God’s Presence Today
While God’s presence was often revealed through visible signs in the Old Testament, He now dwells within believers through the Holy Spirit. The visible symbols of the Old Testament have been replaced by God’s presence within us. Jesus is Immanuel, “God with us,” and through the Holy Spirit, God dwells in His people. God’s presence gives us strength and courage to continue through the challenges of life and ministry. He invites us to draw closer to Him, trust His leading and allow Him to direct our paths.
There is a difference between God being present in our lives and intentionally spending time in His presence. When we come into God’s presence, transformation takes place. He reveals more of Himself to us and often shows us things about ourselves that need His grace and correction.
God’s presence within us empowers us on our Christian journey. Even when facing difficulties, we can remain confident that He is with us. Others will see the difference His presence makes in our lives as we respond to challenges with faith, hope and trust. When the Holy Spirit is at work within us, our language changes, our attitudes change and our lifestyle reflects Christ. His presence guides us every step of the way.
The Danger of Relying Only on Experience
Experience can help us accomplish many things in ministry, but experience alone is limited. Every day we need the guidance of the Holy Spirit to direct us. This comes through spending time with God and allowing His presence to live and work within us.
In Exodus 33:14, God gave this promise:“My presence will go with you, and I will give you rest.” Our experience may take us far, but it can never replace daily dependence on God. Ministry is not sustained by past victories or personal abilities. It is sustained by a living relationship with the Lord and by listening to the voice of the Holy Spirit.
A God Who Is Near
Zephaniah 3:17 declares: “The Lord your God is with you, the Mighty Warrior who saves. He will take great delight in you; in his love he will no longer rebuke you, but will rejoice over you with singing.” This verse reminds us that God is not a distant judge. He is a loving Father and a Mighty Warrior who is present among His people. He saves, protects and delights in those who belong to Him.
God’s presence is among us. Whatever challenges we face, whatever opposition comes our way, we do not walk alone. He goes before us, stands beside us and remains faithful in every season of life. As Salvationists, we are called to live in the awareness of His presence. When God fills our hearts and lives, we are better able to serve Him, share the gospel and meet the needs of others in His name.
A Prayer for Today
May we daily allow God to take His rightful place in our hearts. May we surrender to His leading, trust His direction and walk closely with Him. As we spend time in His presence, may He continue to shape us into the people He wants us to be.
May His presence remain with us, guide us and strengthen us every day. “The Lord your God is with you.” May that truth encourage and sustain us wherever He leads.
