What a joyful and colourful day it was at Soweto Central Corps as children from in and around the Corps gathered for a very special Children’s Day celebration. The Corps yard was full of happy voices, quick little feet, and bright smiles as children of all ages came together for a day filled with fun, learning, and treats.
This wonderful event was initiated by Nompumelelo Magezana, a Wellness Ambassador by profession and a member of the Corps. With the support of the Corps Officers, the Young People’s Sergeant Major, and the Junior Soldiers Company Guards, the day was carefully planned to ensure every child felt welcomed, cared for, and celebrated. The programme for the day included donations of pre-loved clothing, an age-appropriate mental health talk, exciting jumping castle fun, and, of course, ice cream for everyone.
The morning began with an opening prayer, a warm welcome, and a lively icebreaker activity that quickly filled the space with laughter. The children were then introduced to the guest speaker, Sister Nomsa, a registered nurse and clinical psychologist from Mofolo Clinic. She led an important and easy-to-understand conversation about mental health—what it is, why it matters, and how children can look after their feelings. The children asked many questions and bravely shared their experiences of sadness, stress, and even school bullying.
One of the biggest lessons of the day was that no child should ever be bullied. Sister Nomsa made it clear that bullying is wrong and that no one has the right to make another person feel small or scared. She reminded the children to always report bullying—at school to a teacher, and at home to a parent or guardian. She ended her session with a peaceful mindfulness exercise. The little ones closed their eyes, took gentle breaths, and followed her calm voice as she guided them through a moment of quiet reflection.
Then came the part everyone had been waiting for—the real fun began! In no time, the jumping castle was filled with joyful bouncing. Children enjoyed soft ice cream, delicious hotdogs, and refreshing juice for lunch.
The Sunday school room was filled with bags and bags of donated pre-loved clothes, which will go a long way in helping families in the community. The success of the event could be seen on every bright, smiling face and in the grateful hearts of parents and organisers alike.
