There was a strong sense of anticipation as Officers from across the Southern Africa Territory gathered at Soweto Central Corps on Saturday, 17 January 2026. Coming from different places and seasons of ministry, Officers filled the hall under the theme “Come to the Table: United in God’s Faithfulness, Moving Forward Together.”
The Councils opened with the singing of “Jesus Ngethembisile” (O Jesus I Have Promised), and thereafter Major Noluntu Semeno opened the meeting in prayer, committing the gathering and the work of the Territory to God.
Lieut Colonel Themba Mahlobo, Chief Secretary, welcomed the Officers and acknowledged the breadth of the Territory represented in the room. With warmth and sincerity, he extended a special word of welcome to the new Territorial Leaders, Colonels Stephen and Theresa Malins. Speaking on behalf of the Officers, he thanked them in advance for their spiritual leadership, vision and commitment to strengthening the mission of The Salvation Army in Southern Africa. His words carried reassurance and unity: “THQ and the Field are behind you. We will stand together to do God’s work. We will support you!”

Before Colonel Stephen Malins responded, a band made up of Officers from across the Territory ministered through the hymn “Thou Art the Way.” The music created a reflective pause, and gently turned hearts and thoughts to the One we ultimately serve and follow.
Colonel Stephen Malins responded from the heart. He shared how good it felt to be home and introduced himself simply and honestly: a sinner saved by grace, a disciple, a soldier for Jesus – and, because of God’s work in his life and God’s appointment through the General, the Territorial Commander of the Southern Africa Territory.
Unpacking the theme Come to the Table, Colonel Malins reminded Officers that the invitation is always open. There is freedom to come just as we are, without pretence or performance. Using Proverbs 13:20, he spoke about the importance of walking together and learning from one another, reminding Officers that we are strengthened when we journey side by side and allow “iron to sharpen iron.”

A time of praise and worship, led by Major Happy Madonsela, followed, allowing hearts to respond to God in song. Colonel Theresa Malins, referencing Matthew 26:20, then shared a deeply pastoral message, gently reminding Officers that everything we need for life and ministry is found at God’s table. She acknowledged the emotions present in the room – the joys, the uncertainties, and the weight many carry – and spoke with compassion and assurance. Jesus, she reminded everyone, has already set the table. He has prepared a place for each one. The invitation is not to stand back, but to take our place. Space was given for prayer and quiet reflection, allowing Officers to respond personally to what God had been stirring in each heart.
The Councils drew to a close with Lieut Colonel Nokuthula Mahlobo leading the song “Take My Life and Let It Be,” a fitting response of consecration. Colonel Stephen Malins then pronounced the benediction, bringing the Officers Councils to a close.
