In preparation for the 2026 academic year, the staff of William Booth Boys Residence met for a one-day conference under the theme “Equipped with knowledge and wisdom for the mission.” Inspired by Hosea 4:6, the theme sought to bring clarity and understanding as staff prepared for the year ahead, removing any ambiguity in forging the way forward for 2026 and beyond. The Territorial Strategic Plan was at the heart of the conference, with a key goal being the development of our personnel for the mission ahead.
The day commenced with an interactive devotion presented by Lieutenant M. Mdluli (Corps Officer, Mahhashini Circuit). She powerfully challenged us to begin the year with God, making Him the foundation of all plans in both our ministry and personal lives. Lieutenant B. Nkambule then equipped staff by guiding them through various chapters and sections of the Employee Booklet, providing clarity on labour laws, principles, and Acts that govern our work. Staff were reminded that, as The Salvation Army, we are accountable and cannot simply do what we think is “right,” but must operate correctly and in accordance with the law.
Thereafter, Mr. Ndmumsi Zulu (Programme Coordinator) led discussions on the hostel programme for 2026. The programme will focus on building the Next Generation (Key Focus Area 5 of the TSP), addressing the spiritual, academic, social, and health needs of the boys. As the boys reside on Salvation Army premises, Christ must be central to all that we do and to our daily operations. Many parents entrust their sons to us because they recognise that we are a church, and this is what sets us apart. Lieutenant B. Nkambule further outlined the organisational structure, the current financial situation, and critical administrative tasks that need to be strengthened to ensure the smooth and compliant running of the facility.

After lunch, we were pleased to be joined by our Divisional Leaders, Majors V. and P. Buthelezi, who led the next sessions. Major V. Buthelezi (Divisional Commander) delivered the keynote address, outlining the state of the centre within the broader context of the Southern Africa Territory and reminding us of the mission of The Salvation Army. He emphasised that if the mission of TSA is not lived out within the centre, we risk becoming something other than what God raised The Salvation Army to be in our community. Major P. Buthelezi (DDWM) then guided us through the Child Protection Policy, clearly explaining its importance. She powerfully ministered to us, reminding us that William Booth Boys Residence must be a home and that the well-being of the boys must always remain at the heart of our work.
The day concluded successfully with Candidate L. Masuku leading us in a time of prayer, after which the Divisional Leaders presented certificates to staff in recognition of their participation in the conference. We are confident about the task ahead and ready to embrace all that lies before us.
Testimony from a staff member:
“I have gained much knowledge that will help me do my work better. I now have a better understanding of my job description and what is required of me. Today I fully understood that I am a caregiver to the boys, even though I do not carry the title of Caregiver. I have an important role in the well-being of the boys.”
