Grandparents Day often passes quietly here in Southern Africa. It’s not one of those widely marked occasions that sells cards, captures attention or headlines. But it deserves our recognition—because the role grandparents play in our families and faith communities is deeply important.

Across our country, multitudes of grandparents have done much more than offer support. They have stepped fully into the role of parents—raising grandchildren, providing steady strength when uncertainty looms, and carrying families through some of life’s hardest seasons. Their homes have become safe places, their prayers a consistent source of hope, and their sacrifices countless. This is a time to honour that faithful love.

Passing the Faith Forward

The Bible reminds us how important it is for one generation to pass faith on to the next. Psalm 145:4 says,
“One generation commends your works to another; they tell of your mighty acts.”

Faith is a gift to share. Grandparents have seen God’s faithfulness through many seasons. Their stories and experience form a bridge that the younger generation needs to cross safely. If this connection is lost, the next generation misses out on vital lessons—lessons about perseverance, the reassurance of God’s presence during challenges, and the example of steady, lived-out faith. Psalm 71:18 offers this reminder:
“Even when I am old and grey, do not forsake me, my God, till I declare your power to the next generation.”

Age does not limit our ability to make a difference. In many ways, it strengthens it. With the passing years comes experience—lessons learned through both joys and challenges. This experience brings wisdom that younger generations haven’t yet gained. Older adults often have a clearer understanding of what truly matters and can offer guidance flowing from a lifetime of faithfulness. Their stories carry weight because they have lived them.

Moreover, with age often comes patience, calm, and a deeper trust in God’s timing and purposes. These qualities help grandparents to influence others not just through words but by example—showing firm faith even when circumstances are difficult.

In this way, growing older doesn’t reduce our impact—it enriches it. Grandparents have a unique place in shaping the next generation, offering a perspective and encouragement that only time can provide.

A Heartfelt Thank You

To every grandparent who is still caring—helping with school, preparing meals, offering advice, and holding families together—thank you. Your prayers, wisdom, and faithfulness matter more than you know. Even when it feels tiring or unseen, God sees every act of love.

A Call to the Church

The Church has a vital role. Let’s honour grandparents not just with words but by including them fully in our community. Let’s invite them to share their stories and speak into younger lives. Many grandparents today find themselves parenting again, raising grandchildren in circumstances they may never have expected. Others carry heavy burdens—whether from health challenges, financial struggles, or the weight of loneliness. May our Corps recognise these realities and respond with practical support, genuine care, and ongoing prayer. We need to be a community that walks alongside them, offering strength when they feel weary and encouragement when the road feels long.

By doing so, we not only honour our grandparents but also build a stronger, more connected church family—one where every generation thrives and where the faith that has been entrusted to us continues to flourish.

Your Legacy Continues

Grandparents, your faith still makes a difference. Your example shapes the future. Your words carry influence. Your life continues to speak. On this Grandparents Day, we want you to know this: we need you. Your love, your faith, and the wisdom you carry are gifts the younger generation can’t do without. You hold families together, guide hearts, and point others to God. Your presence matters deeply—today, tomorrow, and always. We honour you. We celebrate you. And we thank God for you.
