There always seems to be some confusion around the exact date for Grandparents Day—some celebrate it in September, others in October, and even July is mentioned. For Bonteheuwel, Manenberg, and Mitchell’s Plain ECDs in the Western Cape Division, this special day was joyfully celebrated on 25 July 2025. Grandparents were invited to come out, be honoured, and enjoy a day of celebration as the children shared performances and heartfelt items from their classes.

Bonteheuwel’s theme for the day was “Laugh, Love, and Legacy.” Lt Desire Dathini thanked the grandparents for the vital role they play in their grandchildren’s lives, reminding everyone that we must laugh often, love unconditionally, and leave a lasting legacy for our children. The grandparents also joined in some fun, showing off their dance moves to the timeless hit “Let’s Twist Again!”

At Manenberg, Captain Phumla Mashaba shared a powerful message on child protection in the community, emphasising that we are our children’s eyes and ears and must keep them safe at all times.

Mitchell’s Plain ECD was blessed by the encouragement and wisdom of Major Hazel de Vos, who focused on The 7 M’s of Grandparenting: Modelling Character & Values – living examples of integrity, resilience, and faith. Our walk must match our talk, and our lives should reflect Jesus. Mentoring – passing on wisdom and life lessons to the next generation. Making Memories that Matter – creating fun, meaningful, and lasting moments with grandchildren. Motivating – inspiring grandchildren to know and live for Jesus from a young age. Maximising Golden Year Impact – reflecting Christlike character and teaching God’s Word so that a legacy of faith is passed down. Multiplying Influence – constantly investing in, guiding, and pointing grandchildren to Jesus. Monitoring – gently leading, praising, and providing positive input.

The Pre-Grade R class from Bonteheuwel recited a heartwarming poem:

From the hair on their heads to the toes on their feet,
My grandparents are really, really neat!
They call me sweetie pie, they call me cuddle bug,
And the thing they like most is a kiss and a hug!
They might read me a book, they might make me a snack,
They like to say “I love you,” and they like to hear it back!
I LOVE YOU!

Let us continue to Laugh, Love, and leave a Legacy.
