It was a joyous Sunday as Soweto Central Corps held a special enrolment service. Eleven children, having completed the 8-week Junior Soldier class, stood before the congregation and recited the Junior Soldier promise to become Junior Soldiers. Their families gathered with excitement and hope filling the air.

In her introduction, Major Thenjiwe Zungu reflected on the journey leading to this day and spoke of what lies ahead, progressing from Junior Soldiership to Senior Soldiership and into other sections of the Corps. She reminded everyone how children are nurtured from Cradle Roll, to Sunday School, and, when ready at age seven, into the Junior Soldier class.

The congregation erupted in cheers as the Junior Soldiers presented a worship dance. Mrs Dorcas Nhlapho, youth mentor and counsellor with LoveLife, then shared a message titled Your Child’s Voice Matters. She encouraged parents to listen well to their children, warning of the many competing influences, especially from social media, and offered practical ways to strengthen communication at home.

The highlight of the day was the enrolment itself. Major Zungu called each child by name, together with their chosen verse. Dressed in crisp uniforms, the children stepped forward with determination, recited the Junior Soldier promise, and parents were invited to witness them sign their pledges. Many were moved to tears as they returned to their seats, pledges in hand.

Afterwards, Major Xolani Zungu preached a short but powerful sermon using the parable of the lost sheep from Luke 15. With stuffed animals placed around the altar – except for one – he asked where the missing one was. When it was found, he reminded the congregation that God seeks the lost because of His great love, pointing to John 3:16.

The Junior Soldiers then demonstrated their learning by explaining the meaning of The Salvation Army Crest and reciting the nine fruits of the Spirit, sharing what each meant to them. The service closed with announcements, offering, prayer, and music from the Junior Band.
