A packed Athlone Corps hosted the officers and soldiers of the Western Cape in an uplifting meeting, ably led by our new Divisional Commander, Major Carin Holmes, as we bid a very fond farewell to our Territorial Leaders, Commissioners Torben and Deise Eliasen, who enter retirement at the end of the year. After singing the stirring song The Wonder of His Grace and an opening prayer by Major Yvonne Wood, several speakers shared sincere and heartfelt words of love and appreciation for our leaders:

  • Representing Retired Officers – Major Hazel De Vos (Beth Rogelim)
  • Junior Soldiers – Kelvin Masawi (Langa Corps)
  • Namibia – Captain Sindisiwe Nkosi
  • Women’s Ministries – Lieutenant Dumisiwe Sibiya

Commissioner Deise Eliasen responded with words of thanks to each speaker and a powerful reminder to live lives of gratitude. She shared the story of when she and her young daughter were alone at home with only enough food for one. Despite the lack of resources, she laid the table and, when her husband arrived home, they gave thanks to the Lord. Moments later, there was a knock at the door with a wonderful cooked meal – including pudding – and bags of groceries.

The Divisional Band then blessed us with a stirring rendition of Euodia, and as always, the United Zim Timbrellists got us clapping and singing along with their excellent contribution.

We were led in an inspiring time of praise and worship by the local Athlone Corps Worship Team before hearing from two more representative speakers:

  • Captain Antony Palmer, via video from St Helena Island
  • Major Heather Rossouw, on behalf of the officers.

Commissioner Torben then delivered a powerful message, reminding us that Jesus is always “around our boat.” He challenged us to obey Jesus’ call to step out of our comfort zone and to keep our eyes on Him. At the invitation, several people made their way to the mercy seat.

The meeting concluded with a lively rendition of the founders’ song, led by Major Patricia Balfour – also retiring soon – as we processed around the hall behind the Army flag. A final and very special tribute was given through the singing, in Portuguese, of the simple yet profound chorus God is so Good by Junior Soldier Ruach Dathini.
