The Salvation Army Mountain Lodge Psychiatric Center situated in Magaliesburg in the Central Division came alive on 8 September 2025 as it proudly hosted a vibrant Health Awareness Day. The event not only promoted physical well-being but also highlighted the importance of holistic care for mental health care users.

The programme opened with a prayer led by Moosa Weapond, followed by a Scripture reading from 2 Timothy 1:7: “For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power, of love, and of a sound mind.” Major Thomas Sesedi encouraged the patients not to be afraid of screening, but rather to view it as an opportunity to understand their health status.

Major Sesedi expressed his gratitude to the representatives from the Department of Health and motivated the residents—referred to as mental health care users—to participate in the screenings. He emphasised the strength and empowerment that come from “knowing where you stand” regarding one’s health.

Adding to this encouragement, Assistant Centre Manager Mr. Faadil Abadar inspired confidence by pledging that he too would undergo the screenings, setting an example of leadership through action.

The day was made possible through the support of eight officials from the Department of Health and NGCT, along with the dedicated West Rand Mobile Clinic (Mogale Clinic) team. Together, they provided essential health screenings, including HIV testing, diabetes checks, Pap smears, and blood pressure monitoring for both residents and staff.

The event featured Sister Buyi, who delivered an informative health talk, while Sister Millicent and Nathi captivated the audience with a live demonstration on proper handwashing techniques—an essential practice for preventing disease.

Beyond health education, the day celebrated joy, talent, and community spirit. Residents entertained guests with lively performances, including the ever-popular Jerusalema dance, soulful music sessions, and other creative displays that left smiles on every face.

The Health Awareness Day was more than just a medical initiative—it was a testament to the centre’s commitment to nurturing mind, body, and spirit. It reinforced the message that mental health care users deserve not only quality psychiatric support but also opportunities to thrive in every aspect of life.

The day concluded with a shared sense of achievement, reminding everyone that health is a collective journey—and awareness is the first step.
