On 16 May 2026, The Salvation Army Youth in Action team in the Mid Kwa Zulu Natal Division hosted a Coffee Drive at one of the DUT student residences, Hlelo Properties Anton Lembede.
Students gathered in the TV room where they usually meet for programmes. The event opened with energetic dances and songs that created a joyful atmosphere. The House Committee Project Officer then welcomed the Action Team, expressing appreciation for their presence and thanking the students for attending.

Mzwandile Ndlovu responded on behalf of the Youth in Action team. He thanked the residence leadership for allowing the team the opportunity to serve and shared the purpose of the day. He explained that the drive was not only about sharing coffee, but also about offering encouragement and reminding students that they are seen, valued and not alone on their individual journeys.
The drive was also supported by guests from Territorial Headquarters Youth Department. Captain Desire Dathini, Territorial Youth Secretary, and Khayelihle Khoza, Territorial Youth and Young Adults Ministries Coordinator, were introduced to the students by Major X Nxumalo.
Captain Desire Dathini shared an encouraging message based on the story of David. She reminded the students how David was overlooked and tasked with caring for the sheep, while God had a greater plan for his life. She encouraged the students to remember that even when they feel overlooked in their studies or circumstances, God still has a purpose and a future for them. God alone knows why He has placed each person where they are.

After the message, students were invited to the coffee station where the team served approximately 120 students with coffee and a muffin. What stood out was not only the number of cups served, but the genuine joy and excitement shared. The smiles and laughter on the students’ faces made the moment truly meaningful.
For the Youth in Action team, witnessing that joy was deeply encouraging. It was a reminder that while students appreciate the practical support, they also value connection, care and moments that bring happiness.
Moments like this remind us of the importance of intentionally reaching young people where they are. Through simple acts of service, conversation and encouragement, the love of God becomes visible and personal. As The Salvation Army continues its mission to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ and meet human needs without discrimination, initiatives like the Coffee Drive show that investing time, care and presence in the lives of young people can open doors for hope, faith and lasting connection.
