Territorial Youth Symposium 2023
In keeping with the Territorial theme for 2023, Growing side by side, the Territorial Youth Symposium, which took place earlier this year aimed to provide a “Voice of Youth for a Healthy Future” by giving young people a platform to voice their concerns with the hope of creating a better future for The Salvation Army.
Leadership at all levels of the organization are acutely aware that our young people “want to be seen, they need to be heard, and they desire to be felt…to make an impact!!” Indications are that our youth are proud of their Salvation Army, and they are yearning to be a significant stakeholder and partner in formulating the future missional impact of the organization within the Southern Africa Territory.
The Territorial Youth Symposium took place at the Altelekker Youth Campsite in Centurion which was attended by over 50 delegates from around the territory. All 8 divisions were represented as well as the mission team from the Education Centre.
The order of activities at the Territorial Symposium began with presentations of the different concerns/topics, discussions amongst the various groups and feedback. Priority concerns were thoroughly discussed, and a problem and solution activity were done to choose the top concerns before the final that was later presented to leadership was chosen.
After robust discussions and engagements, the following concerns were raised by young people at the Symposium:
Generational Gaps:
It’s important to foster understanding and communication between our seasoned leaders and the younger generation. A lack of this connection can leave our youth feeling unheard and misunderstood, ultimately leading them away from the church.
Sexuality:
When discussing matters of sexuality, let’s remember that it encompasses a broad spectrum. We should provide comprehensive education on this topic, ensuring that we include all facets of human sexuality.
Pastoral Care:
The cornerstone of pastoral care is consent and maintaining confidentiality in conversations about sensitive issues. By reinforcing these principles, we can strengthen our support system.
Spiritual Growth:
Young people sometimes feel their spiritual growth is at a standstill. It is essential that The Salvation Army seeks ways to aid young people in their spiritual journeys.
Under-Resourced Youth Department:
A fully equipped youth department at the territorial level can greatly alleviate challenges at the grassroots level. This investment is vital for the well-being of our youth.
Red Tape/Organizational Processes:
The Salvation Army’s procedures and policies sometimes obstruct programmes and growth. It’s important to review and adapt them to the demands of our contemporary age.
Balanced Ministry for Both Genders:
While women’s ministries thrive, there’s a need for more attention to men’s ministries. Providing guidance and support for young men can help address societal issues, such as gender-based violence.
Lack of Youth Retention:
We are witnessing the departure of young people, especially after their university years. To engage these individuals, we should establish a presence on university campuses, making our ministry more accessible to them.
Lack of Officers:
The process/criteria for becoming an officer can be overly rigid, dissuading many young individuals from pursuing this path. We should consider making the process more adaptable and inviting.
Unskilled Local Officers:
Local officers often lack proper training and guidance while being required to serve in various capacities. By investing in their development and journey, we can enhance their impact and influence.
The concerns voiced by the youth, followed by extensive dialogue, led to the development of recommendations that were subsequently presented to the Territorial Leadership after a successful 4 days of tackling issues that are going to build The Salvation Army Southern Africa Territory. The leaders thanked and acknowledged all the young people that were involved in the Territorial Youth Symposium with certificates of participation, and they were tasked to go and make changes in their divisions. The Territorial Commander, Commissioner Torben Eliasen assured young people that whatever that was discussed was not in vain. The recommendations by the Southern Africa Territory Youth were presented to the General at the Territorial Congress.
We eagerly anticipate the growing engagement and impact of young people within the Territory, both in current ministry and in shaping its future.
