The third day of The General’s visit to South Africa was filled with remarkable moments that celebrated the rich history and hopeful future of The Salvation Army in the Territory. The day began with a warm welcome reception hosted by the eThekwini Municipality at the Durban International Convention Centre in appreciation of the work of The Salvation Army.

Later in the day, a memorable torch lighting procession took place, bringing together Divisional Leaders, Officers, and Soldiers from across the Territory. This symbolic act harked back to the historic arrival of the first Officers in South Africa 140 years ago. Majors Francis and Rose Simmonds, along with Lieutenant Alice Teager, arrived wearing sashes reading ‘Africa for Jesus.’  Contemplating the ministry ahead, Mrs Major Rose Simmonds is recorded having written, ‘We must have more of the Divine Power!’  Reminiscent of this prayer, in the months leading up to the Territorial Congress each Division hosted a special gathering expressing the desire for more of God’s divine power, which was symbolised by the lighting of a torch.  The torch lighting ceremonies were a prophetic and symbolic act representing the deep desire of witnessing God’s transformative work in each Division.  The process of the Divisional torch lighting ceremonies culminated as Divisional Leaders gathered their lit torches at Albert Park this evening, and together ignited a Territorial torch held by Commissioner Torben Eliasen. The Territorial Commander presented the torch to The General who then officially opened the 140th anniversary Congress.

It is incredibly important that we do whatever we need to do to be ready …

The evening continued with a Soldier’s Rally, where Salvationists joined in joyful worship and praise. In his opening address, The General urged Salvationists to be faith-filled, expectant and receptive to the Word of the Lord and prepared to respond with a resounding “Yes, Lord” when God speaks.  Commissioner Bronwyn Buckingham encouraged the congregation with the words ‘Soldiers are the strength of our Army’ and affirmed the potential for world transformation when soldiers live out Kingdom’s standards over those of the world.   The programme included beautiful musical performances and featured a production that delved into the history, development and passion of the Salvation Army in Southern Africa. Following this, The General shared a compelling message expressing his strong belief in the presence of the Spirit of God hovering over the Salvation Army.  General Buckingham emphasized the urgency of preparing for a fresh moving of God saying “It is incredibly important that we do whatever we need to do to be ready for a new move of God among us.”  The Holy Spirit’s presence was palpable as Salvationists bowed both hearts and knees in the presence of God.

The first day of the Congress came to a close, marked by God-glorifying worship, historical reflections, and a palpable sense of excitement and anticipation for the even greater things that are yet to come!
