Music is a family gift, and, in my case, my dad was my very first music teacher and the first source of musical inspiration. The types of music that shaped my journey as a musician include brass band music from The Salvation Army, European Brass Bands, and the Field Bands of South Africa. I always found great joy in learning music and performing in ensembles. My growth as a brass musician was truly fulfilling. I nurtured this passion, studied music, which allowed me to perform on many local and international stages, achieving things I never thought I’d be capable of as a musician.
Nothing beats the dual fulfilment I receive from being able to worship and praise God with the very talent He bestowed upon me – musical and spiritual fulfilment. I am indeed blessed to share my talent with fellow Bandsmen and Songsters, to teach, share my experiences, and pass on the knowledge I’ve obtained over the years. It is a way to give back to the very people who shaped who I am as a musician.
Music is a ministry, not a performance
Being a musician in The Salvation Army is truly special. Our brass band playing is of international standard, a goal I strive for every day when I practice. However, what’s truly special is the reason behind it – the Message! Using music as a medium to convey His Word, because with music, we find healing and comfort. Being able to play music in that way makes it even more special. I’ve always believed that ‘Music is a ministry, not a performance.’
Now, I teach music at a Boys’ School in my hometown. Being able to play in the Galeshewe Corps and Far South Sectional Bands has been amazing. Bandmaster Dingaan Chabalala always says that sometimes he can’t really explain how we achieve the sounds we produce; we are just Holy Spirit-led, which is true.
I always look forward to new music and new ways to connect with God through music, as well as hearing from people who are touched by our music. The stories and testimonies they share are always humbling and encouraging to hear.
I hope to continue growing as a Christian, strong in faith, and as a bandsman in The Salvation Army, ministering the Word of God through music.
