Ms Liezl Andrade from the THQ Finance Department shares part of her incredible journey with The War Cry.

Almost three years ago, I went through a very dark space in my life, something I would never wish upon anyone. I lost my family, lost my job, and struggled to find work. Unfortunately, I found myself on the streets. My pastor at the time was helping me where she could.

I was notified about The Salvation Army in Krugersdorp. Coming from Alberton, I initially thought it was too far and that I would never be able to see some of my close friends. I felt even more entrenched in darkness. But I continued to pray.

After considering it and discussing with my pastor, she took me to The Salvation Army in Krugersdorp. I had an interview there, and later that day, I packed up and moved there. Fortunately, they had space for me. The Salvation Army provided three meals per day, a hot shower, a bed and chores while we looked for work. I met some amazing people. Listening to their journeys, I realized that mine was not as bad as it seemed. We all have stories to tell.

The Salvation Army helped me in many ways …

The Salvation Army helped me in many ways. I even had opportunity to help others. I was able to listen and offer advice, and help in any way that I could. If anyone needed assistance, I would be there. We had a church service every Sunday at the Centre. They had a beautiful garden where the roses bloomed, and the green grass provided a place to sit. I had my own spacious and nicely painted room. They treated me like family. No one there judged me. Yes, there were rules, just like anywhere else, but the atmosphere was relaxed. If we had any problems, we could speak to the Majors at any time. They were kind, lovable and always willing to help—a true open-door policy.

I learned to be calmer and more peaceful. I loved cooking, and they gave me an opportunity to work in the kitchen, preparing breakfast, lunch and dinner for all the residents. If there were leftovers, we could give them to the homeless. It was an amazing and satisfying feeling to see the joy and happiness on everyone’s faces. Meanwhile, I was still looking for work.

My life changed immediately…

During my tea break in the kitchen, I noticed a job vacancy posted on the board. I went to read it, and I thought, “Wow, this is up my alley.” I am a credit controller, so I applied for it, not really thinking about the location at the time. It turned out to be at The Salvation Army Territorial Headquarters in Braamfontein. Two weeks passed, and I hadn’t heard anything from them. Then I received the call. My life changed immediately. I went for the interview and was invited for a second interview. My starting date was July 4th, 2022. I was employed as a Finance Officer. By May 2023, I had become a Senior Administration Officer in the Finance Department.

I am very grateful to my pastor who sent me to The Salvation Army in Krugersdorp and absolutely blessed to be part of The Salvation Army. I am part of their family.
