From Monday, 20th May, to Friday, 24th May 2024, the conference facilities at Territorial Headquarters buzzed with the energy and enthusiasm of Divisional Youth Officers (DYOs) and Divisional Children’s Ministries Officers (DCMOs) from across the Territory. They gathered for their annual conference focused on Youth and Children’s Ministries with the theme ‘Siyakhula’ (We are growing). Organized by the Territorial Youth Secretary, Captain Nonhlanhla Maphalala, and the Youth Department, the event aimed to inspire growth, networking, direction and renewed commitment to nurturing young lives in faith.

The week commenced with a keynote address from Commissioners Torben and Deise Eliason, setting a tone of inspiration and vision for the days to follow. Each day was anchored by evening devotions and Bible studies, encouraging spiritual reflection and worship. The participants also joined the THQ staff for Thursday prayers, launching Child Protection Week in the Territory.

A diverse range of speakers enriched the conference with their knowledge and experience. Representatives from Heartlines shared valuable perspectives and resources, while Youth Alpha engaged the group with innovative approaches to youth evangelism and discipleship. Throughout the week, other critical topics were explored in depth, including The Future of Children and Youth in The Salvation Army, Building a Sustainable Youth Ministry, Children & Youth Statistics and Leadership Development.

The conference culminated in a closing meeting with Lieut Colonels Themba and Nokuthula Mahlobo, whose words both encouraged and challenged the DYOs and DCMOs. As the DYOs and DCMOs departed from the conference, they left not only with renewed spirits and increased knowledge but also with a sense of support and community. Empowered and inspired, they return to their Divisions ready to advance youth and children’s ministries … for the sake of the lost and for the glory of God!

The ‘Siyakhula’ conference emphasises The Salvation Army’s continued commitment to the spiritual growth and well-being of children and youth in communities across the Territory. With strengthened networks and encouraged hearts, the DYOs and DCMOs are well-prepared to continue to assist Corps and Centers in creating environments where every child and young person can grow in faith, love and service. Together, we are indeed growing—Siyakhula.
