On August 3rd, 2024, The Salvation Army Imbali Corps came alive with creativity and celebration as it hosted a Fashion Show and Graduation Ceremony for a dedicated group of sewing project students. This event marked the culmination of a nine-month training programme in Basic Sewing, Pattern Making and Design, an initiative by the Women’s Department and the Mid KwaZulu Natal Division.
The sewing project group, consisting of one male and twelve females, started on this journey with the goal of acquiring practical sewing and business skills. Throughout the course, participants were taught to create patterns, cut fabric and sew various garments including pants, dresses, suits and trousers for both men and women. This comprehensive training equipped them with the knowledge and confidence to design and produce their own clothing.

The highlight of the event was the fashion show, where twenty models took to the runway showcasing the students’ impressive work. Each model donned original pieces designed and made by the students themselves, reflecting their creativity and the skills they had honed over the past nine months. The audience was treated to a vibrant display of unique designs, from elegant dresses to stylish suits, all meticulously crafted by the graduates.

The Graduation Ceremony was a proud moment for the students, as they received recognition for their hard work and dedication. The initiative was more than just a sewing course; it was a means of empowerment, providing participants with valuable skills that could lead to self-sufficiency. Commissioner Deise Eliasen, Territorial President of Women’s Ministries (TPWM), and Lieutenant Colonel Nokuthula Mahlobo, Territorial Secretary for Women’s Ministries (TSWM), were present to celebrate the achievements of the graduates, supported by Major Priscilla Ziqubu, Divisional Director of Women’s Ministries (DDWM). As the graduates celebrated their achievements, a sense of accomplishment and hope for the future filled the room. The skills they acquired through this programme open up new opportunities for them, whether in starting their own businesses or contributing to their communities.

The event at Imbali Corps not only showcased the talents of the students but also highlighted the impact of combined efforts in creating positive change. This successful graduation ceremony serves as an inspiration for future initiatives aimed at empowering individuals through practical training and community support. The Salvation Army looks forward to seeing the continued growth and success of these graduates as they embark on their new journeys.
