On 30 November 2024, Peart Memorial Corps hosted the Territorial Carols by Candlelight service. It was an afternoon of music, worship, and focused time to pause and reflect on the light that Christ brings into the world.

The programme opened with music from participating brigades and guests, setting the tone for what was to come. Lt. Colonel Nokuthula Mahlobo led the congregation in singing O Come, All Ye Faithful, a powerful reminder of the call to worship and celebrate the birth of Christ. Major Nhlanhla Ziqubu followed with an opening prayer, focusing hearts on Jesus.

The Central Divisional Songsters filled the room with the familiar beauty of a Christmas carol, and Commissioner Deise Eliasen, Territorial President of Women’s Ministries, delivered a heartfelt response. Her words encouraged everyone to participate in the 16 Days of Activism against violence in all its forms.

The Methodist Hiswa Choir’s performances added depth and richness to the evening, their voices filled with both joy and reverence. Commissioner Yvonne Conrad, International Secretary for Africa, shared an encouragement about showing the light of Jesus to those around us. The Central Divisional Youth Band as always brought energy and sensitivity as they played.

Commissioner Torben Eliasen, Territorial Commander, shared an important announcement regarding the upgraded songbooks. The Zulu and Xhosa songbooks will be combined, as will the Sesotho and Setswana songbooks, emphasizing The Salvation Army’s ongoing commitment to worship and music. He also shared the good news that the songbooks will be available on an app in the coming year.

The Far South Sectional Worship Team led a joyful time of singing, followed by the Central Divisional Ladies Band. The Christmas story production by the Mission Team was a meaningful retelling of the nativity. It brought the Biblical narrative to life, reminding all of the humble beginnings of the Saviour’s birth.

Commissioner Keith Conrad shared a devotion, reminding the congregation that there is no life without light and urging them with these words: “We must be the light that shines in the darkness.” As candles were lit, the room filled with a quiet glow, symbolizing Christ’s light in the world. The congregation then joined the band in singing “Silent Night,” a fitting conclusion that united everyone in worship and reflection. Commissioner Yvonne Conrad closed the evening with a benediction, sending everyone out with a renewed sense of purpose and peace.

The Carols by Candlelight service at Peart Memorial Corps was a time to remember, reflect, and refocus – bring people together, pointing hearts toward the true light of Christmas—Jesus Christ.
