Who is Jesus? He is The Word

“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning.” John 1:1-2 (NIV)

When John the disciple wrote his Gospel, he didn’t start with Bethlehem’s manger or Nazareth’s carpenter’s shop. No, he starts his account with eternity. He begins with an introduction to Jesus that stretches beyond time and space: “In the beginning was the Word.” John wants us to know something crucial about Jesus right away: He is not merely a part of the story—He is the story. He’s the main character, the author, and the message itself. John’s words are like a lighthouse beam cutting through the fog of history, pointing us to the One who has always been there: Jesus, the Word.

The Eternal Word

Before there was a single sunrise, before the ocean’s first wave, before the mountains took shape—Jesus was there. He wasn’t created; He is. He existed before anything else did. This changes everything for us, doesn’t it? In a world where everything seems temporary, Jesus offers us something constant and reliable. The same Jesus who was with God in the beginning is with us right now. When we feel like life is shifting beneath our feet, we can hold on to the One who never changes. He is eternal, and that means His love for you is eternal too. You don’t have to wonder if He’ll still be there tomorrow—He always has been, and He always will be.

The Word in Relationship

“…and the Word was with God…”

What a beautiful glimpse into the relationship between Jesus and the Father. They were with each other—side by side, face to face, in perfect unity. The Word wasn’t just a bystander or an assistant; He was intimately involved in everything that God was doing. Imagine the tenderness of this connection. The Divine Word

“…and the Word was God.”

This is the crux of John’s introduction: Jesus is not only with God; He is God. He shares the very essence of God Himself. This truth is staggering. It means that when we look at Jesus, we are seeing God’s heart, His character, His power, and His love in human form. Throughout the Gospels, when Jesus speaks, it’s God speaking. When He heals, it’s God’s touch restoring broken lives. When He forgives, it’s God’s grace washing away guilt. Everything Jesus does is a reflection of God because He is God.

Maybe you’ve wondered if God really cares about what you’re going through. Can He really make a difference in your life? The answer is a resounding yes. Because Jesus is God, He has all the power of heaven at His fingertips. Whatever burden you’re carrying today, bring it to Him. Trust that the One who calmed the storm and healed the blind can meet you in your need. He is not just willing—He is able.

The Beginning and the End

“He was with God in the beginning.”

John circles back to this statement to emphasize it again: Jesus was there from the start. He isn’t a supporting character who showed up midway through the story. He’s the foundation, the cornerstone, the Author and Finisher of our faith. If Jesus was with God in the beginning, it means He knows the whole story—your story, my story, the story of the entire world. He knows where you’ve been, where you are now, and where you’re headed. Nothing takes Him by surprise. He sees the bigger picture, even when we can’t.

In a world filled with noise, opinions, and empty promises, Jesus is the Word that stands true. He is the message of hope that our hearts long to hear. He is the answer to our deepest questions and the fulfillment of our greatest needs.
