On 6 May 2025, a devastating fire tore through the home of a family in Ward 6, Coronation – Vryheid, Northern KwaZulu-Natal. The fire left the family with nothing but the clothes they were wearing, destroying their home, furniture, clothing, school supplies, and essential personal documents. Left displaced and vulnerable, they urgently needed assistance.
The Salvation Army’s Northern KZN Divisional Headquarters responded without delay, deploying a local team to assess the situation and provide practical support. Coordination with local authorities and community leaders helped ensure that assistance reached the family quickly and effectively.

Support provided included:
- Help with documentation: Mr Mkhanyiseli Mhlongo, representing The Salvation Army, guided the family through the process of applying for new identity documents and birth certificates for the children. His involvement made it possible for the grandmother to receive a temporary ID, which enabled her to access her pension.
- Essential household items: The family received clothing, mattresses, a two-plate stove, plates, mugs, and personal hygiene kits for each member.
- Emotional support: The family also received psychosocial care to help them begin the journey of emotional recovery after their traumatic experience. They were referred to appropriate government and NGO programmes for longer-term housing and educational assistance.
While our resources may be limited, our compassion is not. The Salvation Army strives to respond with care and practical support wherever possible. In this instance, we were grateful to walk alongside a family facing immense loss. Ongoing support will continue through the dedication of Corps Officer Lieutenant Z. Keyisi and Corps Sergeant-Major Nxumalo.
