Seventy-five years of faithful service, spiritual growth, and community impact were celebrated at The Salvation Army Athlone Corps, Western Cape Division, during the weekend of 21–23 November 2025. Guided by the theme “From Generation to Generation,” and anchored in the Scripture from Psalm 145:4: “One generation shall commend your works to another and shall declare your mighty acts,” the Corps reflected deeply on God’s enduring faithfulness.
Excitement permeated the air as the corps welcomed Majors Darren and Colleen Huke, who were not only former Corps Officers but also the special guests for the anniversary celebrations—adding a deeply personal and joyful note to the proceedings. The Corps was honoured to have the Divisional Commander of the Western Cape Division, Major Carin Holmes, present for the entire weekend. Athlone Corps also acknowledged the presence of former Corps Officer Major Frankie Burgoyne, who had faithfully served at Athlone, and the sole living pioneer of the corps, Envoy William van Graan (R), whose presence beautifully bridged the past with the present.
The celebration included a moment of recognition for three former Salvation Army officers—Patricia Allison, Janette Nero, and David Davids—who trace their roots directly back to Athlone Corps. Special acknowledgment was also given to current officers originating from Athlone Corps who are presently serving elsewhere: Major Juanita Wright, Major Deon Oliver, and Captains Edouard and Lynn Zola, demonstrating the Corps’ ongoing commitment to raising up spiritual leaders.

The celebrations commenced on Friday evening with a service dedicated to honouring the comrades and friends who have been “Promoted to Glory.” This solemn tribute to the faithful departed was balanced by an upbeat spirit as the congregation sang beloved “Golden Oldies” of the Corps, including the classic favourite “Shepherd of Love,” a song that holds a special place in Athlone’s history.
The musical ministry of the Worship Team throughout the weekend was exceptionally powerful, setting a tone of reverence and celebration. Nostalgic moments filled the hall as video messages from former Corps Officers were played, bringing waves of cherished memories and laughter and underscoring the spiritual connections that time and distance cannot break.
Adding a unique touch to the anniversary, a special chorus was composed specifically for the occasion, aptly titled “From Generation to Generation…” This song resonated throughout the weekend as an anthem for the Corps’ past, present, and future.
Saturday morning brought an eruption of high-energy fun as the Kids’ Ministries team took charge, hosting a fantastic outreach event for the children of the Corps and the local community. The grounds were transformed into a vibrant playground, filled with all the essentials for a memorable day. The children were captivated by Majors Darren and Colleen Huke, who demonstrated their passion for children’s ministry by leading an engaging programme that included a delightful puppet show filled with laughter and lessons, as well as a relevant and inspiring children’s message.
The celebratory spirit of the 75th Anniversary continued into Saturday evening with a special service that was both musically invigorating and deeply moving, showcasing talent from across the division and beyond. The evening was highlighted by two vibrant performances from Bonteheuwel Corps Timbrel Brigade (it is noteworthy that Bonteheuwel Corps was originally an outpost commenced by Athlone Corps) and Athlone Corps Youth and Kids’ Club.
A truly special moment came with the testimony of Rosalind Tuck, who had travelled all the way from the USA to attend the weekend. Her personal story offered a powerful reminder of God’s faithfulness and grace. The Saturday evening gathering became a beautiful mix of vibrant youth expression, musical excellence, and heartfelt testimony—perfectly setting the stage for the final day of celebrations.
Sunday commenced with a March of Witness, boldly reminding the community of The Salvation Army’s presence and ministry. The United Band led the way, their music resounding through the streets as a visible expression of faith. The atmosphere in the hall was electric, with the space filled to capacity. Much of the excitement was due to the presence of two special guests: Commissioners Trevor and Memory Tuck. Their return was deeply significant, as they were appointed to Athlone Corps in the 1970s and served there for an impressive eight years. For many longtime members, their presence rekindled rich memories and deep affection.
The congregation was blessed as the Commissioners brought their respective messages. Adding to the significance of the day, a group of new senior soldiers were formally enrolled, symbolising the continuation of the Corps’ mission through committed members. The service was enriched by two testimonies from Athlone’s faithful stalwarts:
· Mrs. Christine de Jager, the oldest living soldier and number 1 on the soldiers’ roll, shared her testimony.
· Mrs. Margaret Adams, recognised as the longest-serving Home League Treasurer at the corps, shared her story.
The anniversary service culminated with a powerful message delivered by Special Guest Major Darren Huke, entitled “Legacy of Blessing.” The message resonated deeply with the congregation, leading to significant moments of spiritual commitment.
As the service ended, the Mercy Seat was lined with seekers wanting to make a recommitment and renew their pledge to serve Jesus through The Salvation Army. This moving scene was a beautiful confirmation that the spiritual legacy passed down over 75 years is not only intact but actively bearing fruit in the lives of the current generation.
The 75th Anniversary celebration of The Salvation Army Athlone Corps truly honoured its past, celebrated its present, and inspired a hopeful future—fulfilling the promise of Psalm 145:4.
