Doubt is not a sign that faith is absent. But it is often a sign that faith is under pressure. Even the strongest believers encounter moments where questions rise faster than answers and uncertainty feels close. The good news is that God has never left us defenceless in those moments. He has given us His Word!
Scripture is not simply a collection of encouraging thoughts. It is God speaking truth into the places where doubt often tries to settle. When doubt whispers lies, Scripture responds with truth. The enemy often works by questioning what God has said. We see this in the very beginning when the serpent asked Eve ‘Did God really say?’ That same question still echoes today. Did God really promise to provide? Did He really say He is with you? Did He really mean that you are forgiven?
If Scripture was His response then it surely must also be ours.
Jesus showed us how to respond. When He was tempted in the wilderness He did not argue or reason with the enemy. He quoted Scripture. Each time His response began with ‘It is written’. Jesus trusted the authority of God’s Word even when His circumstances were difficult. If Scripture was His response then it surely must also be ours. And we rely on the Holy Spirit to help us understand and apply these truths in our own lives.
Faith grows as God uses His Word and His Spirit to shape what we believe. Romans 10 verse 17 reminds us that faith comes from hearing and hearing through the word of Christ. Faith does not grow by avoiding doubt. It grows by filling our hearts and minds with truth.
When doubt says God has forgotten you … Scripture says I will never leave you nor forsake you. When doubt says you are not enough … Scripture says God’s grace is sufficient. When doubt says your past defines you … Scripture says you are a new creation in Christ.
… lies loose their influence.
However, the key is not just owning a Bible but opening it. Scripture works when it is read, spoken, remembered, and trusted. We strengthen our faith by returning to God’s Word daily not only in crisis but in ordinary moments. When Scripture becomes familiar truth becomes easier to recognise and lies lose their influence.
There will be days when belief feels hard. On those days we can pray like the father in Mark chapter 9 ‘Lord I believe help my unbelief’. God does not reject honest prayer. He meets us there and often He uses His Word to rebuild what doubt has tried to weaken.
The Bible is not distant from our struggles. It speaks into fear disappointment confusion and waiting. It reminds us who God is and who we are because of Him. As we read, we are reminded that God is faithful that His promises stand and that our hope rests in Him not in our feelings.
Doubt may come but it does not have to win!
Doubt may come but it does not have to win! When we choose to trust what God has spoken even when we do not understand everything faith grows. The Word of God remains powerful, alive, and active. When we turn to Scripture we discover that God is still speaking and His truth still holds.
Let us choose to listen.
