It’s that time of year when the world celebrates “fresh starts” and lists of resolutions appear everywhere. I’ve tried making New Year’s resolutions many times, but they seldom last longer than January. Perhaps your resolutions bring more results or last longer. Maybe you’re better at this than I am, but I never seem to stick with them for very long. So this year, I am not making any.

My biggest reason for this is because resolutions often focus on what we can do—how we can improve ourselves, how we can perform better. But lasting transformation comes from God, not human determination. As Paul reminds us, “Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind” (Romans 12:2). True change begins when we allow God to shape our hearts and minds, not when we rely on our own willpower.

Rather than chasing lists or deadlines, I am learning to remain sensitive to the Spirit’s leading—attentive to what He wants to change, refine, or do in me. A gentle conviction in prayer, a challenge in Scripture, a quiet prompting to act in love— when I act on this, these are the moments where real transformation takes place. Lamentations 3:22-23 reminds us, “Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for His compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.” Each day offers the chance to experience His mercy, not because of what we achieve, but because of who He is.

So I am entering this new year without resolutions but still with purpose and intention. My aim and deepest heart’s desire is intimacy with the One who knows me fully and loves me completely. If change comes, it will come through Him. If strength is needed, it will be His. As Jesus said, “Apart from me you can do nothing” (John 15:5). This posture … humble, expectant, dependent … is far more fruitful than any list of goals I could ever write.

As you step into this new year, what if, alongside any resolutions you make or instead of them, you also asked God to show you where He wants to work in your life? How might your days change if you listened more closely to His Spirit, letting Him guide your choices, priorities, and growth?

Perhaps you could pray this prayer with me as we journey through the new year together:

Lord, as I enter this new year, help me to be attentive to Your Spirit. Show me where You want to work in my life, guiding my choices, priorities, and growth. Whether I have resolutions or not, let my heart be open to Your leading. Teach me to trust Your timing and Your ways, and to follow You with humility, faith, dependance and obedience. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
