Let’s get real for a moment: Youth ministry is essential—a lifeline for the future of The Salvation Army, your Corps, and frankly, the world.

Young people are asking big questions about life, faith, identity, and purpose. When the church shows up for them—creating safe, welcoming spaces where they can explore these questions—they find answers that shape their lives. When we don’t, they search elsewhere, and too often, those paths lead away from God and the church. Faith that sticks grows in authentic community and through relevant teaching. When young people experience this, they carry their faith into adulthood, living it boldly and with purpose.

Teenagers today face pressures we can barely imagine—from social media to mental health struggles. They need a place to belong, to be heard, and to be loved unconditionally. Youth ministry offers that place. Youth ministry fuels leadership development. Many of tomorrow’s leaders are sitting in youth group chairs today. Investing in them equips them to lead with passion and integrity.

Here’s the bottom line: Youth ministry creates an investment with eternal returns. It serves as the front line in the battle for hearts and souls.

If you’re involved in Corps leadership or serving on a team, ask yourself: Are we prioritizing youth ministry? Are we listening to our young people? Are we creating environments where faith grows strong?

Here is how your Corps can get started:

  1. Begin with prayer and vision. Ask God to show you the young people in your community and what He wants to do through them. Dream about the kind of space and relationships you want to build.
  2. Identify leaders or volunteers. You don’t need a large team—just people who care about young people and are willing to invest time and energy. Sometimes, one passionate leader can make all the difference.
  3. Create a welcoming environment. Think about a place where young people can gather comfortably—at your Corps, a community space, or even outdoors.
  4. Plan simple activities that connect faith and life. Bible stories, relevant discussions, music, and games that encourage community and real conversation.
  5. Listen to the youth. Ask them what they want, what they struggle with, and how they want to grow. Let their voices shape the ministry.
  6. Build relationships. Youth ministry thrives when young people know they’re seen and valued. Be present, be consistent, and be genuine.
  7. Partner with parents and the wider Corps. Youth ministry doesn’t happen in isolation. It’s part of the larger family and mission.

Remember, every great youth ministry starts small but with big faith. The key is to start—then grow and adapt as God leads. Don’t settle for good enough. Push for great youth ministry. Dream big. Pray hard. Equip well.

The future of The Salvation Army depends on the young people we disciple today.
