As the Western Cape continues to battle an increasingly harsh and wet winter, The Salvation Army has stepped forward with the 2025 Winter Blanket Campaign—an initiative born from compassion and driven by a steadfast commitment to community care. This yearly effort was created to support the growing number of people facing dire conditions without access to basic warmth and protection.
For many across the province, winter is a fight for survival. Those experiencing homelessness, living in shelters, or residing in informal settlements often endure the cold without heated spaces, dry clothing, or adequate bedding. The bitter winds, unrelenting rain, and freezing temperatures of the Western Cape winter add to an already precarious situation for the vulnerable.

In response, Salvation Army units across the province mobilised to collect and distribute essential winter items. Community members were encouraged to donate brand-new or gently used blankets, jackets, scarves, and socks at local drop-off points—including accessible locations like the Spar at Vangate Mall. The campaign was supported by local volunteers, donors, and Salvation Army soldiers who rallied to meet this growing need.

Since launching in early June, the drive has reached approximately 3,000 individuals in need across the Cape Flats, with participating units also serving hot meals and distributing food buckets, hygiene care packs, sanitary kits, and warm blankets.
The success of this campaign would not have been possible without the overwhelming generosity of partners, volunteers, and the broader public. It’s more than just warmth—it’s hope, compassion, and a reminder that kindness can weather any storm.
