Mary never saw it coming. One moment she was planning a wedding, the next she was preparing for a baby she had not expected. Her hands may have trembled as she listened to Gabriel’s words. Her heart surely pounded. She had questions … real ones. How will this be? (Luke 1:34). Perhaps she wondered, What will Joseph say? What will the neighbours whisper?

Joseph had his own plans. Build a home. Marry Mary. Probably live a quiet life in Nazareth. Then came the news that interrupted his dreams. Mary was expecting a child, and Joseph knew he was not the father. In that moment, his world must have tilted and his future felt blurred.

Disrupted plans. Both of them faced them. Both of them felt the weight of uncertainty. And both of them heard the same words: Do not be afraid (Luke 1:30; Matthew 1:20). Mary chose trust: “I am the Lord’s servant” (Luke 1:38). Joseph chose obedience: “He did what the angel of the Lord had commanded him” (Matthew 1:24). No debate. No delay.

They teach us something vital: faith is not having every detail explained. Faith is leaning into the One who holds every detail. Scripture reminds us: “The plans of the Lord stand firm for ever, the purposes of his heart through all generations” (Psalm 33:11). His purposes are complete in Christ (Ephesians 1:9–10), and nothing surprises Him.

Perhaps you can relate in some way. Maybe your plans have been rearranged. The job you counted on disappeared. The relationship you cherished ended. The future you imagined feels out of reach. You wonder, Lord, how can this be?

Listen to the whisper that came to Mary and Joseph: Do not be afraid. God’s purpose for your life remains good. His plan may look different from yours, but it is never less than good. “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight” (Proverbs 3:5–6).

Mary carried Jesus into the world. Joseph protected the promise. Together they walked a road they never expected and saw God’s glory unfold. So take courage. When your plans fall apart, God’s purpose still stands. He is with you in the questions. He is present in the waiting. And He is working for your good: “…and we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose” (Romans 8:28).
