In a world where power can be both a force for good and a source of oppression, The Salvation Army stands firm on its belief that power should be wielded with accountability, humility, love and justice. At the core lies the understanding that power, in itself, is neither good nor evil—it is the manner in which it is employed that defines its character. Where should Salvationists stand regarding the use of power? The International Positional Statement on the Use of Power guides our thinking and practise and can be found at: https://www.salvationarmy.org/ihq/ipspower

The Salvation Army recognizes that power comes in various forms—economic, emotional, legal, physical, political, psychological, religious or social—and asserts that it should always be utilized to promote the values of the Kingdom of God: love, justice and mutual respect. As such, Salvationists should vehemently oppose any abuse of power that leads to oppression, cruelty, corruption or the denial of human rights.

Guided by the example of Jesus Christ, who demonstrated both authority and servanthood, The Salvation Army emphasizes several principles which underscore the accountability of individuals for their use of power, the responsibility to act for the benefit of those in need, and the necessity of humility and love in wielding power. Our Biblical and theological background highlights the inherent dangers of seeking absolute and unaccountable power, which stems from a sinful desire for independence from God and dominance over others. Instead, Salvationists are called to reject the lust for power in favour of a servant’s heart, echoing the teachings of Jesus and emphasizing that true happiness lies in aligning one’s will with God’s.

In practical terms, The Salvation Army’s response to the issue of power manifests through its commitment to bringing relief and justice to the suffering, poor, marginalized, and oppressed. Through various initiatives, including social programmes, advocacy efforts and engagement with world leaders and organizations like the United Nations, The Salvation Army seeks to empower those whose power is constrained and improve the lives of millions worldwide.

Whether it’s providing education opportunities for children, offering support to victims of abuse, or advocating for economic justice and environmental protection, The Salvation Army endeavours to use its own power wisely and for the betterment of all.

Points to ponder:

  1. Reflect on instances in your life where power has been used positively or negatively, and consider how you can apply the principles outlined in the article to your own actions and interactions.
  2. In what ways can you actively contribute to promoting love, justice, and mutual respect in your community, workplace, or social circles?
  3. Consider the concept of servant leadership exemplified by Jesus Christ and its relevance in today’s society. Reflect on the balance between authority and humility in leadership roles, and ponder how you can emulate Christ’s example in your own leadership style, whether it’s within your family, work place or broader community.
