When we think of motherhood, we often picture pregnancy, nappies, sleepless nights, bathing, burping, feeding, potty training and all that is involved in caring for a child. But there is a whole other dimension to motherhood within the family of Christ. It goes beyond the physical and involves nurturing people’s souls. It’s a calling that Godly women, regardless of whether they have borne children, can fulfill by stepping into the role of spiritual motherhood.
In Titus 2:3–5, Paul talks about how older women should mentor and guide the younger women in faith and godliness. This is a beautiful reminder of the role spiritual mothers play in the church community, sharing their wisdom and nurturing the next generation of believers. So, what does it mean to be a spiritual mother? To a degree it involves engaging similar nurturing instincts and relational skills that mothers use with their children. Just as a mother nurtures her children, spiritual mothers provide a nurturing environment where younger Christians can grow and thrive. This nurturing involves both practical support and emotional encouragement, creating a safe space for spiritual growth to unfold.
… they offer gentle yet firm encouragement…
Spiritual mothers are like gentle guides encouraging their spiritual children to step out and deepen their faith. Like a mother guiding her child’s first steps, they offer gentle yet firm encouragement, cheering them on and urging them to walk in faith and intentionally engage in spiritual growth. But it’s more than just cheering them on. Spiritual mothers also help their spiritual children see their true potential in Christ. They are like mirrors reflecting back their identity in Christ and God-given purpose, empowering them to walk confidently in who God made them to be.
Spiritual mothers also share their wisdom and life experiences, imparting valuable insights and lessons learned along their own spiritual journey. It is like having a wise friend who’s been there, done that (and has the tshirt) and is just there to guide you through. Through their guidance and mentorship, they help younger believers work out the complexities of faith and life, equipping them to overcome challenges and embrace God’s plan for their lives.
… show what it looks like to live out your faith in a real, tangible way.
Through their own words and actions, spiritual mothers show what it looks like to live out your faith in a real, tangible way. Spiritual mothers model godly speech and behaviour, through their consistent witness and faithful living, and they inspire younger believers to walk in integrity and holiness. Spiritual mothers also know when to say “no” to things that might steer their spiritual children off course by offering correction.
… isn’t just for a select few.
Spiritual motherhood isn’t just for a select few. The opportunity to invest in the next generation is for available for all women, young and old, single or married, with or without children and is desperately needed. Your influence, guidance and love have the power to shape lives, strengthen faith and leave a lasting impact for generations to come. While not every woman has the ability or opportunity to give birth, every woman can become a spiritual mother and shape the next generation. The opportunities are endless and the need is great; will you step into this extraordinary role that could shape the next generation and impact eternity? “One generation shall commend your works to another and shall declare your mighty acts.” Psalm 145:4
