The Battle Cry community engagement initiative was birthed to provide a safe space for women in the Manenberg community. It was launched as a transformative 7-month journey for women ranging in age from 18 to 40 years.
The launch theme, “My Brand – Who Am I?” set the tone for a journey of identity and purpose. Women were encouraged to reflect on how God sees them and to begin walking boldly in that truth. The programme consists of sessions focused on restoring identity, building confidence, and empowering women to walk boldly in their God-given purpose.
Each Battle Cry session combines biblical teachings, open discussions, prayer, and creative expression, with guest speakers sharing testimonies of overcoming life’s setbacks and challenges. As the ladies learned to sew, one stitch at a time, it became evident that, just as they were sewing stitch by stitch, they were also taking back their lives, one day at a time.
The group of ladies meets weekly at TSA Manenberg Corps. The programme has become a safe and nurturing space where they can heal, grow, and rise together—finding their voices, strengthening their faith, and forming lasting bonds of sisterhood. The initiative also provided an opportunity for women with children under the age of 5 to enroll their children in the ECD programme, where the little ones receive intentional educational care and holistic support. The ongoing weekly sessions, each with its own unique theme, continue to allow for creativity, reflection, and practical application.
Session Highlights:
- ““Ready, Set, Sew” Captain Phumla encouraged the women to trust God’s timing through hardship, comparing God to a master tailor who lovingly restores brokenness into something beautiful. Scars were reframed not as setbacks, but as part of a divine design.
- “Beautiful Cloth” Envoy Amin shared from Joshua 1:9, highlighting the strength and courage needed to embrace one’s God-given worth. The session reminded the women that even with imperfections, they are chosen, woven, and called beautiful by God.
- “Ready, Set, Patterns” Major Juanita led a session on recognizing the spiritual patterns God is forming. The women were urged to stay spiritually alert and obedient, trusting that even when the full picture isn’t clear, God is shaping their lives intentionally.
- “Ready, Set, Reflect” Envoy Anthea guided a time of reflection, inviting the women to pause and assess their spiritual and emotional journey. The session emphasized that reflection is not for regret but for realignment with God’s truth and His greater plan.

These values help create a positive environment where women feel safe, heard, and empowered to grow.
Impact in the First Two and a Half Months
I believe that in just the past two and a half months, Battle Cry has already:
- Drawn a committed group of women, many of whom attend faithfully
- Created a strong sense of community and sisterhood
- Sparked testimonies of healing, renewed faith, and restored confidence
- Begun shaping spiritual identity through biblical truths and creative themes.
Battle Cry is more than a weekly gathering—it is a divine movement of restoration and empowerment. As women journey through each themed session, they are being stitched into God’s beautiful embroidery of purpose, healing, and hope.
I believe their voices are rising not in defeat, but in victory. Their “battle cry” is one of faith, identity, and transformation. As the programme continues into the coming months, we look forward with expectancy to all that God will continue to do through the lives of these incredible women. We are thankful for the resources received from the Territorial Women’s Ministries Department and trust that as the initiative continues, the women will grow even more in their God-given purpose.
We are also grateful for the team of ladies who lead this group weekly: Captain Phumla, Envoy Amin, Envoy Anthea, HLS Avril Thomasso, and DDWM Major Juanita Wright.
