It was a typical Sunday evening on St. Helena Island after church when I crossed the courtyard from the Corps hall to my quarters and slipped on moss, resulting in a fall. The following morning, my left arm was painful, and my wrist was swollen. Fast forward a few weeks, and I began experiencing several more signs that something was wrong. I sought medical attention, and after undergoing some initial tests, I was diagnosed with cancer. Shortly after, I found myself on an emergency flight back to South Africa, accompanied by an angel in disguise, Envoy Coral Yon.
I thank God for guiding us even before we left the Island. He led us to the right hospital and oncologist in Cape Town, where I could receive treatment for Metastatic Stage 4 breast cancer. Initially, I encountered some challenges with chemotherapy, but God once again intervened, leading the doctors to provide an alternative treatment. This gave me hope of being alive even after my 50th birthday, which I had the privilege of celebrating with my colleagues and friends.
Throughout my journey, I faced several health challenges, and Major Lorna Fillies® was a true Godsend, caring for me during my times of need. I was seriously ill and had to undergo radiology treatment to address the spreading of tumours to my brain and lymph nodes. While there were some deeply unsettling moments, I remembered that I had asked God to help me be brave, and He did! God faithfully answered that prayer. Yes, I found a capacity that I was unaware I was capable of.
Cancer brings many challenges, from hair loss and loss of appetite to muscle mass reduction and issues with fingernails and toenails, just to name a few. However, my greatest challenge was trying to remain composed for the sake of my friends and colleagues. I spent a lot of time shedding tears in front of strangers to better manage my emotions around my loved ones. My dear friend, Major Moya Hay (PTG), played a crucial role in helping me express my emotions. As word of my situation spread, many new supporters emerged, which helped maintain my positivity. I am deeply thankful to Majors Yvonne and Allister Wood for answering my spiritual questions and standing by me during the darkest times when I called out for God to come and take me.
People often ask me for advice. Well, my advice is to surround yourself with strong Christians and to hold tightly onto Jesus’ hand.
I was given a Scripture:
“The Lord Himself goes before you and will be with you; He will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged.” – Deuteronomy 31:8
In my journey over this past year, and the time remaining for me, this Scripture holds profound meaning. There is a version of the Bible that states, “never ever ever will He leave you” – three times. It was impressed upon my heart that Jesus understood this specific pain, and on the third day, He rose victoriously over the pain and conquered cancer – just for me.
I may not be surprised if I see heaven soon, but I will be surprised by all the people I will meet. My prayer for all the readers is that you live your lives according to God’s will so that I can meet you at Heaven’s Gate.
Praising and thanking God for your testimony as you continue to trust Him on your journey
I wish to place on record what you meant to me as my Commanding Officer at Athlone Corps no noduring a very difficult time in my life. All glory goes to God
I am a cancer survivor now 7 years. I am so proud of you and your strength. I shall keep you in my prayers.
Thank you for sharing your difficult but brave journey, you are an inspiration to us all.
